How to make Bicerin. It’s that time of year when all I can think about is travel. And mostly about traveling to Italy and France. So we made Bicerin, as seen in Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy. Have you had this coffee drink? It’s popular in Turin, Italy. We’ve been watching movies and shows that inspire European travel. And, of course, one of those shows is the CNN series about Italy.
So this week, my favorites are mostly travel related. We’ll see what Cindy and Mary Ann came up with and see if they have travel on their minds too!
But first, let’s talk about that Bicerin. We haven’t had the drink in Italy, but Stanley Tucci made it popular, which is now a widely searched-for drink. It was not hard to find directions on how to make Bicerin.
It’s pretty straightforward, and it’s just what it looks like. Three distinct layers in a small clear glass. On the bottom, dark chocolate; the middle, espresso; and on top, milk, and foam.
In the show Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, asks the server how to drink Bicerin. She says not to stir but to sip. I must say, it is tempting to stir, but I did resist for the first few sips.
Here’s what you’ll need to make Bicerin:
- Dark chocolate
- Espresso coffee
- Whole milk
Special equipment you might need:
- An espresso machine, or you can use a stovetop espresso pot.
- A pot with a heat-proof glass bowl to use to melt the chocolate
- A milk frother (electric, or you could use a hand-held one like this).
- A spoon
- Something to pour the coffee and chocolate, like pitchers or a measuring cup.
Bicerin
The three-layer hot drink has chocolate, espresso, and milk.
- Prep Time: 10 minutes
- Cook Time: 5 minutes
- Total Time: 15 minutes
- Yield: 2 1x
Ingredients
- 3.5-ounce dark chocolate bar
- 3–4 ounces espresso
- 4 ounces milk
Instructions
- Place a heat-proof glass bowl in a pan of water on the stove and melt the chocolate.
- While the chocolate is melting, fill a small pitcher with hot water to keep it warm.
- Brew the coffee. We used three shots of espresso for two Bicerins.
- Froth the milk.
- Once the chocolate is melted, empty the water from the pitcher, wipe it dry and pour it in.
- Fill the bottom of your serving glass with half of the melted chocolate.
- Pour coffee over the chocolate using the back of the spoon so the coffee falls gently on the chocolate.
- Using the same method, pour the frothed milk over the back of a spoon and scoop the thick milk foam on top.
Here are a few more travel-related finds this week!
Clutch Charger
I was having lunch in the city with my friend Diane this week, and my phone was on low battery. I was annoyed with myself for not being prepared, but Diane whipped out her Clutch charger, and I was back in business in no time!
Clutch chargers call themselves the World’s Thinest Charger. And I would agree. It’s about the size of a credit card. You can order yours and get 10% off with this code: ANNIE37890
Public Goods
I ordered these products for refills for our bathrooms, and then I also ordered the travel set. I always take my own shampoo and conditioner because, in Europe, even the nicest hotels do not have conditioners.
Saltwater Sandals
Remember Saltwater Sandals? They have been around forever! I saw that Madeline had a new pair she bought to take on her trip to Spain and France. They can get wet, are super comfortable, and look darling with skirts, shorts, jeans….everything! They pack small in a shoe bag that you can tuck into your carry-on.
An Eyelet Shirt from Zara
I love this eyelet shirt from Zara. It’s oversize, which makes it perfect to wear with everything—white jeans, linen pants, a skirt, and over a swimsuit.

I am so ready to travel anywhere! Now I am really ready! I did not know about the clutch charger. It sounds like I need to get one! Saltwater sandals for adults! Who knew! I will pass on the chocolate espresso drink because I am not a chocolate fan, but Steve would love it!

That recipe looks amazing! I think we have all the ingredients, too!
