How to make the most delicious cinnamon sugar toast requires a field trip to a small cafe on Suffolk Street in New York City.
Davelle in New York City
Davelle is a traditional Japanese cafe that serves the most beautiful toasts. Both sweet and savory toasts are like a work of art. My friend Diane Karmen was happy to assist me in this little field trip, and for the sake of research, we ordered four toasts, including the one we are making today!
Beautiful Toasts Served at Davelle
The cafe is in a small space with only three tables and a bar with six seats. We timed it perfectly to have one of the tables at the window! If you happen to find yourself in the area of the lower east side, I recommend stopping for a coffee and toast any time of the day! Davelle is located at 102 Suffolk Street and is open from 8 am until 5 pm. In nice weather, they do have a few tables on the sidewalk. Note: They open at 9 am on the weekends!
Cinnamon Sugar Toast, Sugar Cinnamon Toast, or Cinnamon Butter Toast?
Since it’s tartine Tuesday, my simple toast, or tartine, is cinnamon sugar toast served like Davelle. Is there anything better than a really good piece of perfectly toasted bread with butter, cinnamon, and sugar? I’m not sure if there’s a correct answer to the perfect name for this simple toast, but the way in which it’s made makes a difference.
I don’t know how they make it at Davelle, but I made a version that’s equally as delicious and quite beautiful, too, in my opinion!
The Ingredients:
- Bread, like Texas Toast
- Salted butter
- Granulated sugar
- Ground cinnamon
The special tools or equipment that might make it easier to make cinnamon sugar toast:
- Shakers with fine mesh tops. One for each the sugar and the ground cinnamon.
- A cast-iron skillet
- Card stock and a circle punch to make a template
First, The History of Cinnamon Sugar Toast
The history of cinnamon toast takes back to 15th-century Europe. The ingredients for cinnamon toast – bread, butter, sugar, and cinnamon have not changed.
The Definition of Cinnamon Sugar
Cinnamon sugar is a mixture of granulated sugar and ground cinnamon to add flavor to foods like Belgian waffles, French toast, churros, and Snickerdoodle cookies. McCormick describes it as “the comforting scent of Sunday morning…” – I could not describe it better!
A recipe for cinnamon sugar toast, if you can even call it a recipe!
Printcinnamon sugar toast
- Prep Time: 10 minutes
- Cook Time: 10 minutes
- Total Time: 20 minutes
- Yield: 4 1x
- Category: breakfast
Ingredients
- Four thick slices of bread (Texas Toast works great)!
- 3–4 tablespoons butter, softened at room temperature
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Spread the butter on both sides of the bread, and heat a cast iron skillet stovetop.
- When it’s hot, add one slice of bread and fry until lightly browned; repeat on the other side.
- Once you’ve “toasted” all four slices of bread on both sides, you’re ready to add the sugar.
- Add the sugar on one side using a shaker or a mesh sieve and then shake off the excess.
- Then lay the template on top and add the cinnamon the same way or use a shaker. Carefully remove the template, and move on to the next piece of toast.
- Serve immediately!
Notes
Of course, you don’t have to make and use a template, but it does make it extra fun to serve. Frying the bread stovetop with the butter added first makes it extra decadent. This is a special occasion toast that’s so easy to make and will instantly bring back waves of nostalgia!
What I loved about making this is the memories it stirred thinking back to making cinnamon sugar toast for my kids when they were young. Maybe not the most nutritious breakfast or snack, but certainly one that will bring back waves of nostalgia.
