Set a Simple Dining Table for an Al Fresco Dinner

Setting a simple, neutral summer table 0utdoors
Summer dinners outside are one of my favorite things to do. There’s something about keeping it easy and unfussy that makes everyone feel more relaxed, including the host. Here’s how I like to set a simple, neutral table for a casual summer evening.
Today, I’m joining a few friends to share our summer tablescapes. So if a simple, neutral table is not what you are looking for, I am sure someone will have a table that inspires you for your next summer dinner party.

Stick to the basics
A white or natural linen tablecloth is a great starting point. It instantly makes things feel pulled together without trying too hard. I almost always use a linen tablecloth for outdoor dining tablescapes, but inside, I’m more likely to leave the table bare.
I’m using a mix of linens on the table and the small table holding the drinks. The tablecloth is this one from Terrain in white. The linen napkins are neutral in color and also from Terrain. They come in a set of two and are nice and thick. I never need to iron them. I hang them to dry and then press with my hands when they are slightly damp. They also have pretty table runners that would add another layer.
Keep the colors soft

I love layering in neutrals—think white plates, or the vintage French brown and white floral plates on wood chargers, paired with linen napkins in a soft, neutral tan. It feels calm and timeless. Each place setting includes a small white bread and butter plate, accompanied by a vintage butter knife.
The vintage copper preserves pan is used as an ice bucket for guests to help themselves to drinks.
Add greenery or fresh flowers

I’ll usually clip a few branches from the yard or grab herbs from the garden. A handful of olive branches or eucalyptus down the center is enough—no big floral arrangement needed.
For this table, I used pots with herbs such as rosemary and lavender, and placed them in the center of the table. In keeping with the neutral theme, I covered the soil with small white stones. Simple, but still a little more polished for an outdoor tablescape.
I aged the pots with garden lime, you can read more about the simple process in this post.
Candlelight always
A few votives or simple taper candles make everything feel a little more special as the sun sets. I reuse the same glass holders all the time; the little shot glasses from Walmart, along with Weck jars or yogurt jars, are perfect for tea lights.
Over-the-table rod

We use our over-the-table rod every chance we get. It’s easy to make simple jar slings (read this post for step-by-step instructions. You can decorate with jars, flowers, leaves, rattan string lights, or a combination of these elements. You can learn more about using an over-the-table rod in this post and this one as well.
I am using a branch with the brackets for the over-the-table rod. It does come with a bar, but I often like to change things up and make it more earthy. An idea I leaned from the designer at Terrain at Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
Comfort first and what I wore

Cushions on the chairs or benches, light throws or cardigans, in in case it gets chilly—it’s all about making it comfortable to linger at the table longer.
You really don’t need much. Just a few thoughtful touches and some good food (even takeout works!) and you’re set. It’s about gathering, not perfection.
My outfit is also casual and neutral. I’m wearing these linen trousers, white tee and cardigan from Eileen Fisher with all leather Birkenstocks.

Annie, every detail is so fabulous! I love the relaxed and casual feel of this whole situation!! You’ve thought of every detail to make your guests feel welcomed and your outfit compliments this perfectly!
