These easy and delicious popovers are one of those recipes that feel fancy but are surprisingly simple to make. The light and fluffy rolls are always a crowd-pleaser, whether served alongside a cozy soup, as part of a holiday spread, or enjoyed on their own with a little butter. Personally, I love them with a little brown sugar and maple syrup butter from Trader Joe’s.
What is a popover?
A popover is a light roll with a lot of flavor, made from a simple egg batter that is similar to the English version of Yorkshire pudding. It’s typically baked in muffin tins or in a popover pan. The difference between a muffin tin and a popover pan is that the walls of a muffin pan are slanted and the walls of a popover pan are straight. We make ours in a muffin pan.
Popovers can be served as a sweet for breakfast, topped with fruit and whipped cream or served plain with butter and jam for afternoon tea. They can also be served as a savory treat with meat and cheese for lunch or dinner.
We’ll be serving them as a side dish for our Thanksgiving meal this year.
What I love about popovers is that they only have five simple ingredients you probably have in your pantry and refrigerator right now. There is no yeast, baking powder, or baking soda.
The origins of popovers
Some of the oldest references to popovers date back to the 1850s and the first cookbook to print a recipe for popovers was published back in 1876.
The American version of the popover is basically the same thing as Yorkshire pudding in England, minus the beef drippings. Without the beef drippings, American popovers are much more versatile in the different ways you can serve them.

The ingredients for making these easy and delicious popovers

- Eggs (room temperature)
- Melted butter
Recipe instructions for easy and delicious popovers
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees
- Use one tablespoon of the melted butter to brush the inside (sides and bottom) of each muffin cup and put the muffin pan in the oven for 5 minutes.
- While the muffin tin is in the oven, mix the eggs in the blender. Then add the warm milk and blend again. Add the flour, salt, and 2 tablespoons of melted butter and mix again until completely blended.
- Transfer the batter to a bowl or glass measuring cup with a pour spout, and pour the mixture into the warmed muffin tin, and distribute the batter to eight cups.
- Put the muffin tin onto the center oven rack and bake for about 35-40 minutes until they are golden brown.
Note: When the popovers are done baking, remove them from the muffin tin and using a paring knife cut a small slit in the side of each popover. This will release the steam and help keep the crispiness. Also, do not open the oven door while they are baking as this might cause the popovers to deflate or collapse.
