Make Simple Watercolor Valentine Twig Plant Stakes

This year, make simple watercolor Valentine twig plant stakes to give with a small plant. You only need a few supplies for the Valentine’s Day craft. You can make them ahead and stick them into a potted plant or a spring bulb plant from the grocery store.
I’m joining a few friends for Valentine’s crafts, and my craft today could not be easier. Naturally, it involves foraged twigs! You know how much I love twig stars, but I can’t make twig hearts, so I painted them onto thick watercolor paper and made a frame from twigs.
The supplies and tools you will need:
- Foraged twigs
- Watercolors and a paintbrush
- Watercolor paper
- Paper trimmer or scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Pruner to cut the twigs
- A small plant and clay pot
- Preserved moss to cover the soil
How to make these simple plant stakes

I love DIY and craft projects, but even if that’s not your thing, this one might be. It’s so easy, and once you have a few supplies, you can use them for hand-painted cards, place cards, bookmarks…the list goes on. I don’t make a lot of Valentine’s Day decorations now that my kids are older, but this is a fun way to make a little gift for a friend.

1. The first thing you need to find is a few twigs. Since the “frames” we will be making will be relatively small, you’ll want pretty thin twigs that are sturdy enough to be inserted into a plant like a plant stake. I used hydrangea twigs.
2. Next, cut a piece of watercolor paper into 2.5 x 2.5″ squares (or a little larger if you prefer). On a flat surface, start watercolor painting a heart shape or whatever you choose for your design. It could even be abstract, like we did here.
I used only red and brown watercolors, but use whatever colors you like. I chose red for the hearts, and then, to stay with the rustic vibe, I used brown with the red. My paintings are more art projects than paintings, but I still had so much fun creating these little Valentine’s cards or notes. It’s like the perfect craft. It takes very little time, and there’s no shortage of twigs in my backyard in the winter months.
3. Once your cards are dry, start cutting the twigs. You’ll be creating a frame. You will need two twigs of each size. The horizontal twigs are cut just slightly longer than the card. Then, the vertical twigs for the side need to be longer to be inserted into the plant like a plant stake.
4. Using hot glue, attach the two smaller pieces first, then add the longer pieces on each side. I use hot glue because it dries fast, but you could use any glue. However, a glue stick would probably not hold the twigs together. It needs to be secure enough to put into the soil.
5. Pot the plant and cover the soil with preserved moss. Ready to gift!

Make a slightly larger plant stake with two cards for a centerpiece.
I wanted one for a centerpiece, so I used two 3 x3″ cards. I painted two so that the centerpiece has one on each side.

You could also make twig frames for photos or postcards

To make twig frames, use larger twigs cut to the size you need. I still used hot glue to attach the twigs at the four corners. Then, I added twine on the top two corners to hang it.
I framed some vintage postcards from Paris (available in our shop here) and a little pocket card from Cafe de Floré.
