How to Make a Simple Autumn Centerpiece for Your Table
Today, I am sharing how to make a simple autumn centerpiece for your table without mini pumpkins or fresh flowers. I don’t have anything against floral arrangements or pumpkins, but a trip to the grocery store is all you need for this simple centerpiece that takes only minutes to assemble.

The wonderful thing about this type of centerpiece is that you can adapt it to any size you want by adding more or less natural elements. It works as a focal point on a dining room table, coffee table, or entryway table, and it could also be used as a Thanksgiving centerpiece.
I love DIY fall decorations because it’s the perfect time to use natural elements in your garden, the grocery store, or local nursery.
What to use as a vessel for this simple DIY fall centerpiece

You could use a basket, a large bowl, a planter, a footed bowl, a tureen, a Dutch oven, or a tray. It would be best if you had something that has at least some flat surface inside the vessel to hold a glass cylinder vase for a candle.
Where to find vessels
You can often find vintage bowls, tureens, and baskets at thrift stores that work for this type of centerpiece. You might also have something on hand, like a big pasta bowl or an outdoor planter you can use inside. Your local craft store, like Michaels, might have something, too.
I used a large vintage copper preserve pan that measures 15″ across. The glass vase inside the copper pan is 4.5″, and a pillar candle is inside. If you did not have room for a cylinder vase with a pillar candle, you could use tapers in candle holders.
A large wooden dough bowl would be another option for this type of centerpiece.
What I used for my early fall seasonal centerpiece

Since I put this centerpiece together before leaving for France this month, I did not use pumpkins or fall flowers. Instead, I used ornamental kale from the nursery and items from the produce department. The total cost for plants and fruits/vegetables was less than $25. When I was done with the centerpiece, we had the artichokes for dinner with a homemade aioli! I planted the ornamental kale in a window box.
- Ornamental cabbage or kale in 4″ pots
- Artichokes
- Grapes in two colors
- Plums

Other items that I could have added to this easy fall centerpiece
- Mini white pumpkins or orange pumpkins if that’s the color scheme used.
- White hydrangeas that are starting to turn pink
- Fall foliage
- Pine cones
Special tools you might need

- A few small glass containers or ramekins to prop up the height of the small nursery pots.
- Moss to fill in if needed (I did not need any moss, but it is a perfect way to add filler, and it still has a natural look).
- Scissors are used to trim any plants or cut grape vines to make multiple bunches.
- Floral foam (I try to avoid using it, but sometimes it is helpful when making arrangements).
How long does it take to make?

Once you have all your supplies ready, assembling your centerpiece takes no more than five or ten minutes. It’s so much fun that you’ll wish it took longer. I used pink linen plaid napkins and a table runner in a similar color palette. I also added extra votive candles in mason jars, mustard jars, and glasses for more candlelight.

The best part is that a beautiful fall centerpiece using classic fall colors is just a trip to the market and a few minutes away! Will you be making one this autumn season?
