Beautiful fall decor starts at the front door as early as August! Fall is my favorite season, and I love to make it last as long as possible. I’m joining a few friends to share ideas on fall decor, and the outdoor entryway seems like an excellent place to start.
We live in a quaint little neighborhood on a peninsula on the Long Island Sound. There’s one long street with side streets ending at little beach areas and a boat dock on the other. Every Halloween, we get tons of trick-or-treaters. The streets have sidewalks and streetlamps, making them a great option for a fun holiday. Almost everyone gets in on the action, and that, of course, means lots of seasonal charm.
The holiday season starts early, with ornamental kale and cabbage in the nurseries and mums arriving in late August. I know it seems early, but people in New England (and everywhere) LOVE the autumn season! I have been seeing people on Instagram calling it AUGTOBER! So, the fall season, at least when it comes to home decor and outdoor fall decor, especially front door decorations, starts in August. There’s plenty of inspiration on my fall Pinterest boards already showing up!
Front Porch Decor
Halloween decorations are so festive and fun, but remove all that, and you have beautiful autumn decorations you can use all through the fall.
To make it very fall-ish, we need a beautiful wreath, pots of dark and moody fall plants, and pumpkins. I always tend to add a rustic touch to my outdoor space. Our home is a shingled cottage style, which makes it perfect for traditional fall colors.
There are so many types of wreaths, from fresh to dried to this faux mossy twig wreath that I chose this year. In the past, I’ve created many kinds of DIY wreaths, from minimal fall wreaths with an apple or small pumpkins to foraged wreaths like this one using pampas grasses. A statement wreath, like the doormat, can dictate the rest of the door decor.
A New Doormat for Your Fall Door
I usually choose a more natural doormat like this one or maybe this Diamond Jute Doormat, but for Halloween and trick-or-treaters, I had to choose something more festive. The Spooky Tree doormat is perfect! It looks great with an assortment of pumpkins in vibrant fall colors. I had to use faux for now, but when we get closer to Halloween, I’ll replace them with a variety of pumpkins in all the colors.
Seasonal Planters for the Porch/Front Door
My favorite way to bring in new seasons is with plants. However, I have every season in mind when I plant my first spring planters. I use a lot of what I have from season to season. The small evergreen plants may go from one pot or planter to another, and the plants I mix it with will depend on the season, but many of the plants can go from spring to summer to fall. The evergreens stay all year! You can see our winter porch here.

Lighting
Fairy, stargazer, and string lights offer a warm welcome any time of year, especially in the fall. We used Stargazer lights in copper lanterns and plan to add a strand of pumpkin spice bulbs over the door for that cozy, welcoming feel. Soft lights in different colors of autumn are the finishing touch—even just for one night.
Handing out candy to trick-or-treaters
Filling little treat bags works well when many little trick-or-treaters come to your door. Letting them grab one is easy, or you can hand them out. I usually put 4-5 pieces of assorted candy in each. Perfect for trading and categorizing later. Remember doing that? We always had friends over for dinner and then trick-or-treating, and I loved seeing everyone’s traditions. It seemed like the kids had as much fun when they returned as they did running through the neighborhood.
We always served pumpkin soup! I can’t wait to make it this year!
