Make a Simple Fall Centerpiece

| | | |

This simple fall centerpiece uses a white pumpkin, hydrangeas, and a pillar candle. Using garden hydrangeas with a hint of pink makes it perfect for an early fall casual centerpiece.

Supplies you’ll need:

  • A small to medium pumpkin that’s about 7″ in diameter
  • 5-7 stems of hydrangeas and 2-3 stems of hydrangea leaves
  • A pillar candle (without fragrance) or a flameless candle
  • A drinking glass that fits the pillar candle you’re using

Tools you might need:

  • A Sharpie to mark the top
  • A sharp knife
  • A power drill with a 3/8″ bit (large enough so that the jigsaw blades will fit)
  • A jigsaw

Power tools are optional. A knife works, but it takes more time and patience!

How to make this planter/candle holder

  • First, clean the pumpkin and mark the top with a Sharpie like you would if you were going to carve a pumpkin as usual, but make it a little larger.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut the top off. If you want to make it easy, use a power drill to drill a hole large enough for a jigsaw blade. Then, Insert a jigsaw into the hole and cut around to remove the lid. Using power tools is optional, but it sure does save time!
  • Clean out the pumpkin and prepare it to hold the hydrangeas and the glass with the pillar candle.
  • Cut the stems of the hydrangeas to about the height of the pumpkin or a little shorter. Insert the glass and pour water around the outside of the glass inside the pumpkin.

Start to fill in around the glass with hydrangeas and leaves.

Insert the candle into the glass and arrange the flowers and leaves until you’re happy with how it looks. Keep it in a cool place until you are ready to use it.

Variations on this Idea

Use any color pumpkin, orange, green, or a combination, and let the color of the pumpkin inspire the flowers or leaves to use. We made these mini pumpkin planters using orange pumpkins and colorful flowers.

Use fresh flowers like Zinnias, Black Eyed Susans, or Coneflowers from the fall garden.

Use store-bought flowers like Chamomile, Chrysanthemums

Instead of flowers, use Dusty Miller or succulents.

Set the Table Using Your Fall Centerpiece

Choose napkins and glassware that blend with the flowers. Add a few votives to create a warm glow to usher in the fall season.

Never leave a candle burning unattended.

I love the idea of using what I have to make centerpieces for holidays or at any time. It’s economical, and inspiration is most likely right outside your door!
