Design Trends for Interiors in 2024

|

Today, I am joining Mary Ann and Cindy to discuss design trends for 2024. For the last several months, I have been saving posts from designers, architects, and people I follow… to my “Trends” collection on Instagram. It included everything from color of the year to backsplashes and countertops to pantry spaces and furniture.

I noticed that people seem to be embracing the lived-in look. For years, everyone had a white kitchen that looked like no one ever cooked. A white kitchen will never be out. It’s timeless. But a more lived-in look seems to be emerging, and that shift is not just in the kitchen.

So, let’s get into it…let’s talk about home design trends and predictions! There’s never been more inspiration for interior design trends. It used to be glossy magazines; now, creativity from nostalgia to sophistication is everywhere we turn!

Kitchens with that lived-in look

A kitchen with rustic cabinets, tiled backsplash, and white countertops. Vintage copper pots warm up the white countertops.

I love this kitchen by Lauren Liess. It’s bight and clean, but warm and cozy at the same time time. It has rustic wood upper cabinets with glass, mismatched hardware, vintage copper canisters, and possibly a vintage rattan pendant.

Gorgeous Pantry Spaces

A lovely pantry space with ample shelving for all your pantry needs.

I don’t think anyone would not want a gorgeous pantry space. Even if you are downsizing, a beautiful pantry is functional and can be a focal point in a home.

A pantry may use traditional details like cabinetry but may be painted differently than the rest of the kitchen. It may have a few vintage art pieces, small appliances, and jars of pantry staples that are both functional for storage and create visual interest.

Gallery Walls

Out with the oversized meaningless art that matches the pillows and throws. Or the perfectly arranged photos in identical frames in a perfect grid. Mismatched gallery walls are gaining popularity by using meaningful and collected art.

It’s not about creating this look in a day but over time, maybe even several years. Or maybe you’ve had art tucked away, hanging in one room or another, and you want to put it all on one wall. That’s what seems to be trending currently.

I recently created this gallery wall in our bedroom using a collection of art from over the years, plus a vintage painting we found at a flea market in Lyon.

An Eames chair is draped with a neutral-colored throw. On the wall is a collection of meaningful photos. In the foreground is a lamp with a wicker shade.

Using Mixed Metals

Just as in fashion, this seems to be done more and more in interiors. I have noticed many brass rails in kitchens, laundry rooms, or anywhere you need hooks. I see brass rails and hooks, but they are often used with other metals like chrome, polished nickel, or black satin.

Bows

The Primitive Home

Bows took over this past year, especially during the holidays! This will continue to trend simply because it’s easy, and you can add a bow to many things. Plus, it’s very temporary. And who doesn’t love a trend that’s not something we will have to live with for years if and when it goes out of style?

There’s a certain amount of charm when it comes to bows. Whether on a wreath, a door, a package, or in your hair. I think we will be seeing a lot of bows this year. Maybe printed on fabrics and wallpaper in a new way that doesn’t look like it’s intended for a nursery.

Where we are seeing bows right now . . .

Florists like Edénique Floral Design in the Netherlands are using them, and I love the sophistication of the bows mixed with candles and the handwritten messages.

Small Lamps

A corner nook with natural wood cabinets and natural wood walls are highlighted with a small ceiling lamp and a small table top lamp.

Amber Interiors

I’ve been a huge fan of small lamps with 15-watt incandescent bulbs tucked into corners and shelves for years. Really, since the time I had my first apartment. Lighting is everything! I think using a small lamp in every dark corner will continue to trend.

Lamps that are rechargeable and need not be plugged in are a great option when using on a table that’s not next to an outlet, on a shelf, or inside a cabinet…so many options!

When designing homes, I’ve had small shelves designed with a space to accommodate the cord in the back and cubbies with electrical outlets…I’m an electrician’s worst nightmare. Skip the overhead lighting, but give me sconces and outlets for little lamps everywhere!

Nesting with Grace

Small lamps provide comfort in living spaces. The lighting is soft and cozy, which is important for creating an inviting home for everyone living there!

A few favorite small lamps included the Como Petite Lamp with the Raffia Shade from Serena & Lily. Also, from Serena & Lily, the Petite Larkspur Lamp with Raffia Shade is a favorite.

We also love the Oval Lamp with the Pleated Shade by Studio McGee for Target and this ceramic one with a gingham pleated shade.

This Rattan Ball Table Lamp is from Pottery Barn Kids, but it doesn’t have to be for kids!

Popular Petite Lamps

Another option for small lamps is to use a rechargeable lamp. There are so many options at different prices. They can be used where you don’t have an outlet or even outside.

Rechargable Lamps

The Flowerpot Lamp is my favorite! It comes in several colors. Also available at Anthropologie is the Poldina Lamp, and it’s quite a bit less in price.

The crystal dimmable lamp is available on Amazon for around $35. Warm and bright light….of course, I love the warm light! I put one in my laundry room for the winter.

Pottery Barn has the Remington Iron Table lamps that come in two colors.

Cafe Curtains

Warm, neutral-colored cafe curtains hang in the lower half of a large window.

Cafe curtains are such an easy swap to make a change in a living room, dining room, kitchen, or any room that you want or need a little privacy but not total window coverage like shades.

Warn cafe curtains hang in the lower part of tall windows in this home.

Considered Things

They can be sort of country or more modern. I wrote more about my love of cafe curtains in this post.

I can’t wait to read trends for 2024 from Mary Ann and Cindy!

  1. I would love to have a pretty pantry again. There might be room in ours although its more like a narrow walk-in closet. I love small lamps too. Hope you are having fun!!

  2. Love that kitchen by Lauren Liess. I have to be honest I am not jumping on the bow trend. Hearts and bows are not my faves, but they sure are big! Pantrys are important as well and you shared some pretty ones. Makes me want to pretty mine up a bit!!

  3. Happy weekend Annie.

I love mini lamps and like you have used them for years. Mini lamps in the kitchen, on a bookcase, or bathroom offer light, ambiance and style to these spaces. As for the cafe curtains, I love them too. In fact am getting ready to add some to a bath where we need light but also a little privacy.
Have a wonderful weekend and thank you for sharing your thoughts about upcoming design trends.

  4. The 2024 design trends are incredibly exciting! Gallery walls continue to be a timeless way to showcase personal style, and I love how they can transform any space into a curated art exhibit. The trend of using mixed metals is another favorite of mine—it adds such a rich, layered look to interiors, blending warmth and sophistication. And those small lamps? They’re perfect for creating cozy, inviting spaces with a touch of charm. I can’t wait to incorporate these trends into my upcoming projects. Thank you for the inspiration!
