A super simple wreath for the holidays hangs on the side door of a house. On a black bench next to the door is a tin house with candles inside, stacks of smooth beach rocks, and evergreens in a pot flank both sides of the door.

How to make a simple candy cane wreath for the holidays. I like keeping DIY craft projects easy, especially for holiday decorations. The harder and more time-consuming they are, the less likely I am to do them. However, the more foraging involved, the better. Which is why I love this easy DIY candy cane wreath. And if foraging isn’t for you, you can buy some greenery at Trader Joe’s or Home Depot.

I usually hang at least three or four wreaths around the house for the holidays—one at the front, one at the back, and a few inside. The rest of the house is decorated, but I have a side door looking a bit sad and lonely. So, it’s the perfect spot for this fun DIY wreath.

You only need a few supplies (probably most things you already have), some foraging for the greenery, and just a little time. The only thing you’ll probably have to buy is the straw wreath form.

The supplies you’ll need

Supplies for making a candy can wreath sit on a black, outdoor workbench. Supplies include a straw wreath form, a small saw, ribbon, greenery, garden clippers, and pine cones in a clay pot.
  • Hot glue gun
  • Straw wreath form
  • Greenery or sprigs of evergreen
  • Ribbon for wrapping
  • Ribbon for a bow
  • Floral wire (or some copper wire or fishing line)
  • Scissors or small wire cutters

Instructions for making a super simple candy cane wreath for the holidays

  1. With a small saw or sharp knife, cut through the straw wreath form
  2. Straighten the wreath form and then bend it into the shape of a candy cane
  3. Wrap some floral wire around each end so that it keeps its form and the straw doesn’t begin to fray and fall apart
  4. Roughly arrange your greenery around the shape of the candy cane
  5. Now, secure the greenery by wrapping the floral wire around it
  6. Wrap the red ribbon around the greenery like the red stripes on a candy cane (some red burlap trim would also work)
  7. Cut another piece of red ribbon, tie a bow, and attach it to the bottom of the candy cane
  8. Hanging is easy. Attach your festive Christmas wreath to your door with a door hanger (I usually use a nail but some twine would work if you have a place to it).
