What I Wore in France in Summer as an Outfit Repeater

I’m joining Cindy and Mary Ann to share our thoughts on summer fashion. We just returned from two weeks in France, and we had every kind of weather, from extreme heat to quite chilly, wet weather. Maybe it’s the in-between seasons that make it hard to figure out how to pack, but even with the huge swings in temperature, I pretty much wore the same thing, but added a sweater or a jacket.
I packed only tried and true favorites. This trip was divided into two weeks. The first week was spent here, where each night we walked through the village of Grignan and had dinner at one of the cafes with outdoor seating. Very casual, so linen pants, sandals, and a poplin shirt.
During the day, we spent a lot of time at the pool. I basically lived in these linen dresses from J.Crew. I’ve had them for a few years, and they are the perfect pool or beach cover-up.

When we went to local markets, I wore linen and poplin to keep cool. Plus, it’s easy to wash and hang dry. Poplin dries so quickly, which is why I think it’s great for travel. Even if you get caught in the rain, poplin is my go-to summer favorite! I have this short-sleeve poplin top in three colors.
I have three pairs of Garnet Hill linen trousers and wear them all summer. I’m wearing the regular length in navy, but they do come in petite.
Poplin Shirt from Alex Mill & Eileen Fisher Linen Trousers

Alex Mill is one of those stores that I only have maybe five pieces total from the brand, but every piece is one that I wear on repeat all year long. Their poplin fabric is gorgeous, and the fit of their Jo shirt is perfect. The Eileen Fisher linen trousers are from last year, and I can tell you I’ll be wearing them again all summer long!
Poplin Shirt from Madewell

Another great poplin shirt from Madewell that is so easy to wear with anything is called the Signature Y-Neck Shirt. I love the collar and sleeves with the piping or trim, which makes it feel a little more elevated than a regular shirt style. The boat shoes are Sperry from Aritzia. The charm necklace is from Roxanne Assoulin. It has a brown cord and a black heart charm.

The Jo Shirt in poplin from Alex Mill, AYR Denim, Sézane Justine Bag, and Birkenstocks.
Poplin from Quince

Quince has some amazing poplin shirts, too! Like the cropped shirt in black, and this striped shirt. Both are around $40.
An Easy-to-Wear Dress from Toast

I brought only one dress (no skirts this time) to wear to dinner in both Provence and Paris. This striped cotton dress from Toast can be worn with Birkenstocks, or in Paris, I wore Jack Rogers sandals that look great with my Sézane Justine bag.
When we travel to France, we are always shopping at flea markets for our shop, so we need to be mindful of how much clothing we pack so that we can save space (and weight) in our luggage for all our vintage finds. The way I pack may not be enough variety for everyone, but it works for me. Almost everything I packed could be worn together.
I was going to focus this post on the viral Sudoku packing method technique, which includes nine core pieces. Three tops, three bottoms, and three layers. Working in a 3 x 3 grid, every piece is interchangable creating 27 different outfits! Is this something we should do? Would you be interested?

I agree with you about linen and poplin. And I love that Toast dress…didn’t know that brand. Glad you and I are back. We need a group call with Cindy soon!
Hi Annie,
Beautiful pieces of clothing, I have my favorite Toast store on Hampstead Hill every time I visit London.
Lovely post thank you!
Francesca! Oh I so want to visit that part of London! And of course, I’d have to popinto Toast! I bought a dress from Toast for Madeline’s pre-wedding that I hope will work. xx
Always enjoy your posts, but rarely comment. Just wanted to say I love how your hair looks pulled back (in a couple of your photos). Not sure if it’s a ponytail or a chignon, but it’s very flattering!
Jeannine! I wish I knew how to do a chignon…It’s sort of that, but not quite! It was so hot in Paris that day (even though we misssed the terrible heatwave). Putting it up wet was all I could manage! Thank you so much for reading…and for taking the time to leave a comment with such kind words! It means the world to me! Have a lovely day!

Dear Annie,
You and I agree that linen and poplin are great summer choices! With your coloring and lovely stature, the brown paisley poplin is an inspiring choice. I’ve linked to Madewell and ordered the same shirt in white. If I were taller I would have ordered the toast dress; it’s still tempting.
Wishing you a delightful summer,
hugs, Diney on Mercer Island
Hi Diney! Let me know wht you think of the white one! I love the style, it’s so easy to wear, nice and cool. I saw the brown one like mine is on sale for $36! Hope you have a lovely summer! It’s in the 90s today, feeling very much like summer in Connecticut. I’ll bet it’s gorgeous on Mercer Island!
