How to make that popular brunch toast! It’s Tartine Tuesday, yet I’m bringing another toast idea for you! You may remember this cinnamon sugar toast from a few weeks ago inspired by Davelle in New York City. One of their most popular toasts is their berry and cream cheese toast, perfect for the Fourth of July! You may even have the ingredients in your pantry and refrigerator!
First, Let’s Get Inspired by the Beautiful Toasts at Davelle in NYC
What you will need to make the berry, cream cheese toasts
- Bread (Texas Toast works well)
- Whipped or regular cream cheese
- Blueberry jam
- Butter
- Raspberries (optional)
The tools you will need:
- Small bowls or ramekins
- Spreaders or narrow spatula
- Toaster or skillet
What’s the best kind of bread to use?
You want a thick piece of bread that’s pretty square in shape. A lot of sandwich bread these days is sort of rectangular. Not quite a rectangle, but not exactly square either. Texas Toast is easy to find in the bread aisle and a little thicker cut and square. So for making fancy toast, this is my go-to bread. I always keep a loaf in the freezer. You just never know when you are going to want fancy toast!
Another option is Brioche-style bread. Also, cut a little thicker than your normal sandwich bread and square in shape! It used to be hard to find, but lately, I’ve seen it at most of the grocery stores I visit on a regular basis. It’s great for French toast or fancy toast of any kind!
The best way to make this fun checkerboard bread
Get your supplies and tools ready. The cream cheese should be a little soft, or whipped works well. Just so that it’s easy to spread.
First, toast or fry your bread with both sides buttered. I do this in a Lodge skillet. But if you have a toaster that works well, that would be great too! Let the bread cool slightly before you start spreading.
Then start with a spread of cream cheese in a corner. I think a small knife or a narrow cake-decorating spatula works well. Then using a clean spatula, do this with the blueberry jam. This is a little trickier to work with and not as easy to make that nice, neat spread move. Alternate with cream cheese and jam, turning the bread back and forth to make it easier to work with the toast like a canvas. Then add some fresh raspberries for a red, white & blue checkerboard toast! And there you have a masterpiece. A toast masterpiece!

Ingredients
- Texas toast bread

Instructions
- Toast the bread in a toaster and then butter, or butter both sides and fry in a skillet. (This is my preferred way)
