4 Fall Jackets That Go with Everything You Already Own

Four wool coats, pants, loafers, scoks, necklace.

You don’t need a whole new fall wardrobe. One good jacket can make the jeans, tees, sweaters, and loafers you already have feel fresh for the season. That’s the idea behind this post: four jackets that work with what’s already hanging in your closet.

What I look for in a fall jacket

  • Works with what’s already in my closet
  • Room to layer underneath without looking bulky
  • Natural fibers that keep you warm
  • A price that feels like a good investment for something you’ll wear for years.

Sézane Will Jacket

Sézane Will Jacket in Houndstooth // Black Tee // Stripe Tee // Neil Pant in Ecru // Trouser Jean in Rustic Teak // Warby Parker Sunglasses // Gucci Loafers // Jeans

The French-girl option: The Will Jacket in beige and black houndstooth – pair with straight-leg jeans and loafers, maybe a silk scarf. Or wear it with my favorite Alex Mill pants in ecru with brown suede Mary Jane flats.

Start with a basic like a long- or short-sleeve tee in black or cream, depending on the jeans or pants you’ve decided on. You can always add a denim shirt as a layer, or keep it simple.

Alex Mill Boiled Wool Jacket

Finn Stripe Button-Down Shirt // Cambridge Boiled Wool Jacket // Light Denim // Stripe Tee // Gucci Loafers // Denim Trousers in Rustic Teak

Do you remember the Geiger boiled wool jackets that were popular in the late 1980s? They were made in Austria and considered pretty preppy at the time. The jackets were cropped and could be worn with jeans, corduroys, skirts, or over dresses. I had quite a few. The Cambridge Boiled Wool Jacket from Alex Mill is the same boiled wool that offers warmth without weight, but much more oversized in the best possible way. Style it over a striped tee or a thin turtleneck, a button-down shirt, and jeans, or even with a dress.

J. Crew Bianca Wool Jacket

Stripe Tee // Felted Wool Sweater Jacket // Jeans // Classic Fit T-Shirt // Warby Parker Sunglasses // Chanel Red Lipstick // Brown Suede Ballet Flats // Denim Trouser in Rustic Teak

A relaxed fit and collarless neckline make this jacket easy to layer. I think the Bianca Coat from J.Crew will be perfect over a Uniqlo Compact Vest for extra warmth.

Buck Mason Wool Chore Coat

Wool Chore Coat // Chanel Red Lipstick // Red Socks // Warby Parker Sunglasses // Stripe Tee // Jeans // Pleated Tote // Gucci Loafers

I’ve had this Felted Wool Chore Coat from Buck Mason for a few years. I reach for it often from late fall through all winter. I layer a Uniqlo vest under it for a little extra warmth on colder days. The brand Mansur Gavriel gifted me the tote. It’s a beautiful bag with a pleated exterior design and a bright red interior. This is the larger tote, and it even fits my laptop.

If you had to pick only one, which would you choose?
