Fall Planter Inspiration

| |

Are you ready for some fall planter inspiration, or is it too early? Every year, I say I will wait and hold onto summer, but then I see the pumpkins, ornamental cabbage and kale, pansies, and tall grasses, and I can’t help myself. I’m ready for the autumn season when the calendar flips to September.

The front porch, back porch, and side door all get the fall treatment. This is my favorite time of year, but since it’s early, I am starting with a few fall containers in our outdoor spaces and will add more as the foliage begins to turn.

Favorite Fall Planters

My favorite fall planters are actually perennials that do well in pots. Rather than buy all new for the relatively short fall season, I love using plants from spring and summer, mixed in with a few new fall plants.

A few plants that are great for transitioning from spring/summer to Autumn

Lambs Ear

The soft texture and blueish-green color blend well with dark ornamental peppers or even burgundy coleus from your summer pots. The coleus may only get you to Halloween, but the colors look beautiful with orange pumpkins.

Dusty Miller

Great to use in pots mixed with any colors of pumpkins. It looks especially beautiful and organic with all shades of green.

Grasses

I adore the look of grasses in any color. They add texture and height. If there’s room in your pot or container, you could add mini pumpkins or mini ornamental cabbage until Thanksgiving. Then, I’ll replace it with pine needles, small pinecones, or moss.

Coral Bells

The dark burgundy or Coral Bells mix Weill with anything for gorgeous fall planters. My one plant has survived since last fall. I need to buy a few more next year. I knew that Coral Bells was a perennial, but I did not realize it would last in a small pot through the winter in Connecticut.

Other Fall Plantings like Zinnias and Marigolds last well into fall and the bright colors look amazing with mums and pumpkins,

Containers from Terrain

I first planted these gorgeous planters in early spring with pussy willows. Then Kimberly Ferns for summer. Now that it’s fall, I knew I wanted to use grasses. I chose the purple fountain grass for its colors mixed with the brown grass. You can see spring and summer in this post.

I love symmetry, but not completely. It’s fun sometimes to keep simple. You can see in this post how I used galvanized planters with boxwood topiaries and filled the base with mini pumpkins. Everyone loves it, and I still see it all over Pinterest every fall.

Now, I like a little symmetry mixed in with some other-sized pots and things like pumpkins and gourds.

The concrete barrel pots come in several sizes, colors and heights, so you can get the scale right for your home. Our home has a cottage-style single door, so I stayed with smaller pots.

If you had a large entryway or double doors with a lot of space, you could go with the larger tall pots and mix in the larger short pots.

Doormats, Pumpkins and Wreaths

Terrain has beautiful fall wreaths. I’m thinking of this one and maybe this beautiful velvet ribbon. Or I may use my frayed ribbon made from canvas. We have this beautiful door mat and this one as well.

I love real pumpkins, but I’m not opposed to mixing in a few real pumpkins with some of these teak pumpkins.

Other favorites this week:

Travel Scale

We are in France, so I have to mention this hand held scale to weigh your bag. I’m not sure how I managed without one. It’s small, weights nothing and there’s no need to stress about being over the weight limit when you get to the airport.

I’ll pay anything to avoid the shuffling items from one suitcase to another to try and shift the weight. No thanks you. But now, before I leave the hotel, I know exactly what each bag weighs and I can adjust as needed.

Croissant Lamp

Like I said, I’m in France, so I have one thing on my mind. Croissants. Have you seen these adorable croissant lamps. I cannot wait to add one to my coffee bar.

Outfit of the Week

Would you wear this $42 lounge outfit? It’s from Amazon and it’s pretty cute. Here’s where I would wear mine…

Picture this…you are staying with a friend and her family. You shower and start to get ready, not knowing what the plans are for the day. But you are ready for coffee, start with wearing your lounge outfit. Perfectly acceptable to head into the kitchen for coffee wearing this outfit. Then once you’ve had your coffee, and discussed the day’s plan, you can go get dressed.

This is perfect for the hotel lobby or lounge too when retrieving that first cup of coffee, but not quite ready to get dressed for the day…because you are on vacation. And it’s okay to lounge…in a $42 2-piece lounge outfit that comes in six neutral colors.

Let’s see what Cindy and Mary Ann found this week!

  1. Do you have the exact link for your two piece outfit with short sleeves? The outfit you linked is similar but with long sleeves. Thanks,

      1. Hi Annie—The link takes me to a two piece outfit but with long sleeves. Your outfit appears to have short sleeves. That may be the only difference. I wonder if it’s been changed to long sleeves due to the upcoming colder season? Thank you

  2. I adore your porch Annie and it always looks so seasonal and pretty! Thanks for all the good plant tips! It’s just about time for me to redo mine now that the worst heat is over.
    Cute lounge outfit too! xo
