It’s September, and Everyone is Back to Wearing All Black

It must be September because, despite a heat wave, everyone is back to wearing black. We are in France, and it’s one of the first things I noticed. When we first arrived, not so much, but then as the days went on, no matter where we were, it seemed the fashionable had returned to wearing all black. Even though it was still technically summer and still quite hot with temperatures in the mid to high 80s, women were back to wearing all black by day and night.

I remember street-style photographer Bill Cunningham did one of his Sunday Style features in the NY Times on how New Yorkers returned to wearing black in August and September; I think I even kept it, but where, who knows!? Anyway, seeing fashionable women all over France wearing all black in September reminded me of this article from 2007.

Read more about Bill Cunningham here and check out his memoir here. There was a wonderful documentary too.
And I must agree that all black starts to look chic by September after a summer of pink and pastels.
Wearing sneakers is definitely in fashion here in France, just like in New York. It’s practical, but it can still look fashionable. I know some would not agree. But if you walk a lot, sneakers are really the most logical choice in footwear. I think these women are rocking the sneakers!

Shiny hair and black head-to-toe, including the bag!

Shiny hair is always in fashion! Again, both are wearing sneakers!
Another fashion trend that I was seeing but not really picking up on it (meaning I didn’t take photos) was the color emerald green! At first, I thought maybe I was seeing it because I programmed my mind to notice. But as time went on and we went into more shops, I realized that emerald green is hot right now! I noticed it mostly in casual clothing, which could be partly because of where I saw it! I’m anxious to observe in Paris if people are wearing green!?
Here are a few of my favorite items I’ll be wearing on repeat, as I always do!
In this recent post, I shared my limited travel wardrobe (with a lot of black clothing), making packing easier. Everything can be mixed and matched in my entire suitcase! The one piece that I wore with everything is my striped KULE long-sleeve Tee. I added it to the board below in black and cream. I could use another versatile top to wear with everything.

J. Crew Cashmere Cardigan // J.McLaughlin Black Leather Loafers // A Corduroy Jumpsuit by Alex Mill // Baseball Cap from Madewell // Trouser Socks // The Boyfriend Tee from KULE // League Sneakers
Let’s see what these ladies say about fall fashion in 2022!

This is so fun following you in France. I love the LBDs with sneakers. Great inspiration!
It’s always so fun to see what they’re wearing in France! I also noticed a LOT of green in the shops when we were there in the spring.
Annie! No one rocks the color black better than you. I can’t wait to hear what the chic ladies in Paris are wearing. I LOVE those J McLaughlin loafers if only they came in a wide I would be all over those!! I love anything textural. Can’t wait for the report from Paris!

Bill Cunningham was so fabulous. So great that you mentioned him. Also noticing more black than usual despite the warm weather. I’ve been sporting it as well.
Thanks for all your great posts.
Hi Leslie! Thank you so much for reading! Wasn’t Bill amazing? I looked forward to seeing his take on fashion every Sunday! I remember the poncho one, the Goyard bags….some relatable, others not as much, but always enjoyable. I had always hoped to see him on hi bicycle in NYC., but never did!

This is so interesting. I’m dying to wear sweaters but sadly it’s in the 80’s outside still. I am loving the fact that tennis shoes are in fashion. I’m getting to the age where my feet need them for long walks!
Me too Jeanne! I hope they never go out of style!
