Dirt Road Farm
Phoebe Cole-Smith
Last Sunday I had the pleasure of visiting Dirt Road Farm with my dear friend Diane Karmen. Phoebe Cole Smith runs the small farm in Connecticut and was having a pop-up farm stand. A few of the vendors were The Hickories, Idyllwild Bread, Red Bee Honey, Frances Palmer Pottery and Cordwood Handmade
The Fire Pit
It was raining, but not a total wash out. I loved the casual fire pit just outside the barn. I hope to recreate something similar this summer at our new (old) house.
The Winter Garden
I love a winter garden. We lived in Southern California and Arizona for many years and that was one thing that I always missed. The growing season never ends. I love the quiet of a winter garden.
The barn was filled with vendors and shoppers. We moved through the line slowly enough to learn about each product and its origin.

One of my purchases was a loaf of sourdough bread from Idyllwild Bread. I immediately came home and made avocado smash on toast.

Avocado Smash on toast consists of only a few ingredients, so the quality of the bread must be amazing. Using Idyllwild Bread really made this a great quick lunch.

- Category: breakfast, lunch

- 1 large ripe avocado
- sea salt
- olive oil
- lemon
- red pepper flakes
Instructions

- drizzle with good olive oil and sprinkle with red pepper flakes
Notes
I’m not sure when avocado toast became a thing, but I only know how to make it the rustic way. I can’t for the life of me cut an avocado into perfect slices, but either way, I love it. It has simple ingredients and the only tricky part is having a ripe avocado on hand. I can keep bread in the freezer, lemons keep for weeks, and I always have salt, red pepper and olive oil.

I just love your blog!!!!
Well thank you Frances! You just made my day. Happy Holidays!
Oh my gosh this looks like fun. I miss a winter garden as well Annie. We can garden year round but the garden sure looks scraggly from August – December! Loved this post!
Your avocado toast was definitely prettier than mine. I just smashed to avocado right onto the bread! Beautiful photos! XO
That’s why I call it avocado smash…verrrry rustic, but so good on Idyllwild bread!
