How I Decorate Brownies for the 4th of July

Homemade brownies are my go-to dessert for every dessert bar I put together — and on the Fourth of July, they’re practically non-negotiable. They’re easy to make, can be baked the day before, and decorating them is one of my favorite parts of making brownies.
Now, the big question in our house has always been: homemade or box mix? We finally settled it the right way — a blind taste test. And I must tell you: homemade won, and it wasn’t even close. Fudgier, richer, and just better in every way.
That said, I’m not above reaching for a box mix on a busy week. But if you want a truly show-stopping brownie, the kind people ask about — I’ve got a foolproof from-scratch recipe waiting for you at the bottom of this post.
For now, though? Let’s talk about the fun stuff: turning a pan of brownies into a Fourth of July dessert!
Decorate using chipboard letters

One of my favorite tricks is using a rectangular tart tin and spelling out words or names with chipboard letters. For these brownies, I went with SUMMER and added small cut-out diamond shapes on either side to fill in the extra space. t’s a simple touch that everyone loves. This technique works for so much more than just the Fourth of July, too. Spell out someone’s name for a birthday, write CONGRATS, or switch it up seasonally — THANKFUL for Thanksgiving, JOY for Christmas, the possibilities are endless!
Here’s how to do it:
- Arrange your chipboard letters (and any extra shapes) on top of the cooled brownies.
- Using a fine-mesh sieve, dust generously with powdered sugar over the entire surface.
- Carefully lift off each letter and shape using tweezers, revealing the design underneath.
Cut out shapes using card stock

Don’t have chipboard letters on hand? No problem — card stock or thin cardboard works just as well! Simply trace and cut out whatever letters or shapes you need. It’s a great way to customize your design without needing any special supplies.
For our square pan of brownies, I cut out small stars and thin strips to create a flag design. And here’s a little secret: I didn’t stress about making the stripes perfectly straight. They’re a little wavy, a little wonky, and that’s exactly how we wanted it. There’s so much charm in something that’s clearly handmade, and on the Fourth of July, a perfectly imperfect flag brownie feels just right.
