Christmas and Winter Front Porch 2023

| |

Terrain was the inspiration for our Christmas and winter front porch 2023. In October, Anthropologie + Pinterest and Terrain transformed a beautiful brownstone in Brooklyn into a magical home for the holidays. And it all started at the front stoop, filled with pots of evergreens and magical lights. While we don’t have a stoop, we do have a porch. Front porch decor is where I start decorating for any season, especially at Christmas.

Two Christmas trees on each side of a door with magical glow light balls in some pots and greenery in others make this Christmas and winter front porch 2023.

Christmas Porch Inspiration at the Brooklyn Townhouse by Anthropologie + Pinterest + Terrain

I knew I wanted to recreate this at our home. I love that it’s festive but can take you through the winter without looking like you left your Christmas lights up too long!

Here is how we created the look at our house.

Evergreen Trees & Winter Greens

I used much of what we already have—a mix of porch pots and planters in different sizes and heights on each side of the front door. For the greenery, we used faux cedar garland that I also used above the kitchen window, on the mantel, and on the Advent calendar.

For winter planters, I love using a mix of evergreens in planters. I started doing this at our house in New Canaan. Each year, I use a version of the original idea I still love.

If you didn’t want to buy evergreen plants, you could use evergreen branches and clippings in pots.

Lights for the Holiday Season

We used two faux snowy pre-lit trees from Terrain. We also added several of the Stargazer Lightorbs.  They come in two sizes. They look perfect for winter porch decor, but my first time seeing them was at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden last summer. You can see them in this reel on Instagram.

Two white Christmas trees with lights are surrounded by large globes filled with small lights giving off a magical glow for the holiday season.

Lights add to the holiday spirit, and the combination of the Stargazer Orbs and the trees creates a magical scene on our little cottage porch.

The Wreath

I realized that we had everything but a wreath. We had to have a wreath! I repurposed a grapevine wreath and attached some foraged evergreen branches on one side. I added two velvet mushroom ornaments and hung the simple rustic wreath using the velvet ribbon from Terrain. I also love my ripped canvas ribbon; it would be perfect for this look!

Simple Winter Outdoor Decorating to Welcome Your Visitors this Holiday Season

A new mat is where I always start when I freshen up my front steps. Terrain has beautiful door mats that are great for the holidays or all year. The one I have appears to be sold out. I love this one and this one…and the red could take you right through February!

You could add some red berries for a pop of color, birch logs, pine cones in crates, or an olive bucket.

Another option for an earthy look without buying evergreens is to use floral wire to attach moss to a ball for several pots. This seems so popular in Europe, but not as much here.

Overall, our Christmas porch is quite simple. Pots of evergreens and boxwood, trees that have 250 lights on each, and the Stargazer Orbs. It took about 30 minutes to move things around and then a little bit longer for Brent to get the lights sorted out. We used two power strips, and they are all on a timer. I simply love it when they come on at dusk!

A front porch is decorated for the season with Christmas trees, garland and magical globe lights that give off a wonderful glow at night.

The Little Book of Hygge on Audible

Remember when The Little Book of Hygge was first released? It changed the way so many of us thought about light, coziness, and so much more. I recently found out it’s on audible.

Sense of Place

The new design book by Caitlin Flemming and Julie Goebel. Cindy recently interviewed the authors and wrote a beautiful post. If you haven’t read it, make sure you do and gift the book to someone who loves collected interiors or yourself! You can read Cindy’s interview right here.

My Favorite Cardigan Sweater

This sort of goes back to hygge. I mean, a cardigan sweater is very hygge! This one from Eileen Fisher is my favorite sweater. I have worn it so many times, and it’s not showing any signs of wear. It holds its shape and does not pill.

I have it in chalk; if you follow me on Instagram, you’ve seen it many times. I think I will order it in gray as well. I wear it with jeans, trousers, midi skirts and pajamas. It is the perfect sweater for anyone who loves a cardigan.

Let’s see what Cindy & Mary Ann found this week!
