Make Simple Air-Dry Clay Initial Tags

|

This year, I’m keeping my gift wrap simple, natural, and a little bit personal. One of my favorite ways to add a handmade touch is with clay initial tags—tiny air-dry clay ornaments stamped with each person’s initial. They look charming tied onto gifts, and the best part? They’re reusable! Think of them as tiny, personalized keepsakes disguised as gift tags.

I’ve been making these for years, and every time I pull them out during the holidays, I’m reminded how versatile they are. You can use them long after the wrapping paper is gone: as napkin rings on a holiday table, tied to a ribbon on a stocking, or even hung on a doorknob. They’re simple, timeless, and so fun to make.

What You Need

How to Make Clay Initial Tags

  1. Roll out the clay
Roll your clay to about 1/8″–1/4″ thickness. I like them just thick enough to feel substantial.
  2. Cut your shapes
A simple circle or oval works beautifully, but any shape you love will work. I’ve even used small scalloped cookie cutters for a softer look. Use a little water on your finger to smooth out any imperfections on the clay.
  3. Stamp the initial
Using small alphabet stamps, press the letter gently into the clay. Imperfection is part of the charm. Before stamping the discs, make sure to check that you have the initial stamp in the right direction. I like to try it out on a small piece of clay before stamping. (center photo above).
  4. Make a hole
Use a straw or skewer to make a clean hole near the top so you can thread ribbon or twine later. And don’t worry if the hole is too small. Air-dry clay is very forgiving. You can even make the hole a little larger after it has thoroughly dried without it breaking.
  5. Let them dry
Air-dry overnight (or longer if they’re thick). Or, if you are impatient like me, put them on some parchment paper on a baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes at 200º. Once dry, you can lightly sand the edges if needed. I rarely do this as I don’t mind the imperfections.
  6. Add ribbon
I love a simple piece of twine or ribbon, depending on the look I’m going for.

Ways to Use Them

Gift Tags

Tie them onto packages for a personalized touch. They make even the simplest wrapping—kraft paper, a sprig of evergreen, and some twine—feel special.

I like to use a mix of ribbons from velvets to gingham, and baker’s twine to more natural jute twine. I always look at craft shops or fabric stores for trims or cords that could work as ribbon.

Napkin Rings

Loop the ribbon around a rolled napkin for a sweet, understated place setting. It instantly makes the table feel thoughtful.

Stocking Markers

Tie them to stockings so each one has a name—or in this case, an initial. It’s a small detail that feels classic and cozy.

Ornaments

Add a hook and hang them on the tree. They look especially pretty clustered with natural textures and neutral ornaments, or mix them in with your vintage ornaments.

Why I Love These

They’re quick. They’re inexpensive. And they’re endlessly useful. But the thing I love most is how personal they feel. Whether you give them as part of a wrapped gift or use them to elevate your holiday table, they add a handmade touch that’s simple but meaningful.

If you make them, I’d love to see them! Tag me on Instagram or leave a comment—nothing makes me happier than seeing your creations.
