I was visiting Madeline and thought I should bring something…and since I was fairly certain she had not yet planted her fire escape herb garden, I made some air dry clay garden markers to go along with some potted herbs. We planted them in her kitchen, and then she carefully put them on her fire escape. You can read more about Madeline’s darling apartment in this post!
Every Sunday, I join my friends Mary Ann and Cindy and share our favorite finds of the week. This week, I have a little bit of everything! I hope you are enjoying a lovely weekend!
Plant or garden markers are so easy to make. Are they necessary? Absolutely not! If you need a garden marker to recognize an herb, you probably are not using fresh herbs for cooking. But it does make it fun for a gift. And if you don’t want to make them, how cute are these blue & white garden markers from Williams Sonoma? They would make lovely table decorations and then parting gifts. Each friend gets to take home a potted herb!
Madeline’s Fire Escape Herb Garden
Here’s what you will need to make a few garden markers
- Package of air dry clay in any color
- Letter stamps
- cardboard to make a pattern
How to make them
- Take about 25% of the clay and roll it out. You want the markers to be sturdy, so make sure it’s still pretty thick.
- Make a cardboard pattern. Then trim the clay and cut the markers.
- Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Using the stamps, press gently but with enough pressure to make an indent in the clay. Make one for each of the herbs.
- Allow to air dry overnight or place in a 200º oven for 30 minutes if you are impatient like me.
Sherry Hart’s Sister’s Kitchen
My Instagram friend Sherry Hart posted a photo of her sister’s new kitchen this week. Sadly her sister was diagnosed with cancer and passed away five months later. She never saw her beautiful kitchen. Hug your sister, your family, and your friends… And follow @sherryhdesigns for beautiful home design ideas and what to wear too! She has exquisite style and a wonderful sense of humor.
Hyggelight® The Growing Candle
I love this small business that makes candles in lovely little pots that then become a planter…the seal that comes on every candle pot is actually seeds that can then be planted in the pot. I love the idea of repurposing, and they even give you the seeds! A great gift for a teacher with a gift card!
The Perfect Fern for Your Front Door Planters
The porch is still a bit of a mess due to the pollen, but once that settles down, we will be enjoying our porch with all of our new pots from Terrain. I shared on Instagram my little trick on planting porch pots. I build up the inside with planters turned upside down and then place the fern inside the pot. It looks like it’s planted, but I can easily remove the ferns and water them, and then once they drain for a few minutes, I can put them back in the pots.
Doing it this way saves the porch. Even if I have a pot that doesn’t have a drainage hole, then the inside pot can fill with water. In the summer…that’s not what we want! Check out my reel on Instagram with the above photo to see how I did it! @most_lovey_things

What a wonderful gift …those plant markers! It would be a fun activity to do with a friend! Wish we lived closer.
And speaking of gifts…how cool is the candle/planter. So fun.

Annie, Love your plant markers…So cute. Madeline’s fire escape is neat- so quintessential New York! That candle that can be a plant later is also a darling idea for a gift.
I do the same as you with most of my planters near the house. A lot easer to change them out too..Those sure are pretty pots!
Hope you have a beautiful weekend!!

I also loved Sherry’s sister’s kitchen and felt so sad her sister did not get to enjoy the kitchen. 🙁

I know, Kim…when I read that, I thought, how terribly sad!

Dear Annie,
My granddaughter and I are always looking for ideas to share with a women’s recovery home in the beautiful Skagit Valley. One of their projects is the cultivation of an amazing garden from which they create flower arrangements and sell from a stand on their country road. They also love projects to include at the stand, so my granddaughter and I plan to share the directions and supplies for the simple markers . We’ll also inspire them with a variety of herbs.
I just returned from our favorite grocery where I shopped for a “gelato board”. Our retirement community hosts a Memorial Day Brunch so we’ve invited new friends for dessert afterwards. Thank you for another simply delicious no work dessert.
Happy holiday hugs, Diney on Mercer Island

Diney! What a lovely story! I can imagine how lovely the flower arrangements are that they sell. I think these garden markers would be a natural fit!
I hope your gelato board is a hit tomorrow! Have a lovely Memorial Day. You’re making new friends and starting new traditions at your new home!
