Make a Fall Centerpiece with Hydrangeas & Mini Pumpkins

Fall is the perfect time for simple centerpieces that last the whole season. I love using mini pumpkins combined with dried hydrangeas to create beautiful centerpieces. This one is in an Anchor Hocking Biscotti Jar. Beside it is a pumpkin candle that smells divine. We picked up the striped stones on the beach this summer on the French-Italian Riviera. The rustic ceramic candle with gray stones on a white marble board is earthy for fall.

Here’s what you’ll need:

glass vases, jar, faux mini pumpkins.

  • A glass jar or vase
  • Mini pumpkins (enough to fill your jar or vase)
  • Hydrangeas

How to put it together

  1. First, decide on the vessel. It needs to be large enough to hold several small pumpkins. When choosing a glass jar or vase, make sure the depth is at least 7 or 8 inches. You could use an Anchor Hocking jar like this in the gallon size. Cylibnder vases in the correct size would work as well.
  2. Gather real hydrangeas in the fall after they’ve started drying on the plant. Once you cut them, they will continue to dry and change color slightly. Cut them relatively short and tie with twine.
  3. It’s tempting to keep the leaves on the stems, but they will eventually shrivel and fall, so you can trim most as you make your arrangement.
  4. Choose the most miniature mini pumpkins you can find. This will help when filling your glass jar or vase. You may need to trim one or two stems as you arrange them in the vessel.
  5. Leave a center opening in the pumpkins to add your hydrangea stems. Add your hydrangeas that you’ve tied together with twine and fill in with any remaining until you have the look you want.
  6. I used all white pumpkins, but a mix, or all orange, would be beautiful too!

Can you use faux pumpkins?

Yes, and the advantage of using faux is that you can use them year after year. I thought these from Williams Sonoma are a gorgeous color. They are about the same price as real pumpkins from Trader Joe’s, and they will last for years.

How long will this arrangement last?

The great thing about this type of fall arrangement is that it will last for at least a month! Even real pumpkins will last that long, and hydrangeas, once dried, will last too! Easy to put together in minutes, and you’ll enjoy all season long!
