Is it better to splurge or save when buying linen? I’m joining my friend Mary Ann to talk about wearing linen. The one question we keep hearing is whether or not it’s worth spending extra and buying “better” brands when choosing linen clothing for summer.
Even expensive linen is not all that expensive!
That’s the good news! Even if you want a fully lined and beautifully made pair of linen pants, they are anywhere from $170 to $300. And they will probably last for years. I’m unsure if that can be said for Uniqlo’s $39 unlined version. Although, I could be wrong. Most items that I’ve purchased at Uniqlo have held up quite well.
That’s why I’ve decided to give saving on linen a chance.
I purchased these linen pants and a shirt in the same color. I was thinking of a suit, and then realized a shirt and pants in the same color is a suit. Sort of, and maybe even a little more practical. So that is what we are going to work with today! I’m going to see how many looks I can create with just one “suit.”
First Look: Wear All One Color
I’m not sure I would wear the two pieces without a T-shirt underneath to break up the color. I see many people doing it, and I love it on them. Even with a pair of Gucci loafers, I feel like I’m wearing pajamas.
Second Look: With a Black T-Shirt
I love that I can wear this “suit” with a black tank or T-shirt under the shirt or a black linen shirt to replace the terracotta-colored shirt. Adidas Sambas, Artemis loafers, or Gucci loafers are all great options.
Third Look: Breaking up the “Suit” with Stripes
Breaking up the “suit” and wearing the pants with my favorite Kule striped shirt. This shirt is always in my weekly rotation at least once. It really does go with everything. Even these terracotta linen pants and Birkenstocks!
Fourth Look – Wear it with Denim & Chambray
Terracotta looks great with any color of chambray and/or denim. Perfect worn with a jean jacket and a T-shirt. The terracotta linen shirt is great to throw on with a pair of jeans. Blue, black, or white are all great.
Fifth Look: Shirt Worn with a White T-Shirt and Jeans
I’ve worn the pants and shirt together and separately on many occasions. I think I like linen pants more than the shirt. I’m 5’10” tall and wearing a size medium in pants and a large shirt. I think Uniqlo considers the pants ankle length, but they feel a little short to me. On most, I think they would be a great length. To have an outfit for travel that’s less than $80, that goes with everything I own and wear, makes sense!
So now that I’ve tried saving on linen, I’ve just ordered these pants and this jacket from Eileen Fisher. I think I could get a lot of use from it, but will it be worth the money? I’ll let you know if I keep it. 😉
Is it better to splurge or save when buying linen? We will see!

What a fabulous post. I like the “suit” idea with a tee shirt. (would make me look taller). That color is great too!
I’m so glad we did this. Great idea about the splurge or save aspect.

Hi Annie
I love that shirt and pants from Uniqlo. I have never tried their linen, but I agree linen does not necessarily have to be expensive as long as it is 100% linen. I wear linen almost constantly in the summer. I love it. That color is gorgeous by the way and looks great with the Artemis shoes!

Annie love all of your looks. I love linen! There are so many great pieces and they do not have to an expensive addition to your wardrobe. Have a wonderful weekend.

Hi, everything looks great on you, but I think I like it best mixed up with the Denim or the stripes! Nice to know I don’t know if I have a Uniqlo near me, but it’s worth checking out!
