Four Simple Things to Refresh Your Home for Fall

Doing these four simple things to refresh your home for early fall will make you love your home again! After a summer of sandy floors and open windows, a little home refresh is just what we need!

The days are getting shorter, there’s cooler weather, and It’s hard to believe that summer is in our rearview mirror. And soon it will be time to cozy up by the fire. Until then, let’s enjoy the early fall.

1. Add indoor plants

Fall is the best time to replant and give all your indoor plants a little love. I’ll be taking inventory of my indoor plants and ensuring they look their best. I’ll dust the leaves, cut off any dead or yellowing leaves, and repot those that need it.

Monstera Deliciosa

As the days get shorter and the temperatures start to drop you can add some indoor plants to make it still feel like you have a bit of the outdoors. I propagated some Monstera plants using my propagation wall, and now I have more plants to add to rooms with lots of light. Monsteras are quite easy to propagate, and they grow quickly. So if you buy one good-sized plant, you could have several in a matter of a few months.

It’s also nice to be able to add a few leaves in a vase in other areas of the house where you may not have enough light to grow an indoor plant. Cut leaves last for weeks in water and add some warmth and texture to a room.

Consider plants that require little light

Not everyone has the kind of light required to grow fiddle leaf fig trees and Monsteras, but some options are great for areas with little natural light, including ZZ plants and snake plants. I have a snake plant in my entryway, and it’s the most low-maintenance plant ever!

In front of the staircase leading to the second floor is a console table. Under the console table are leather chairs and next to it is an indoor plant. On top are some freshly clipped hydrangeas and a gold lamp with white lampshade.

2. Freshen up your pillows, throws, and table linens

There is nothing easier that makes a bigger impact than just switching out some textiles. Out with the linen and in with the wool or woven pillows, throws, and throw blankets.

A black-checked sofa and black coffee table with a crock of hydrangeas are in the foreground. In the background are several indoor house plants.

I always like to start by taking stock of what I already own. I’m not against buying new if needed, but sometimes we can just look at what we have differently. For example, this scarf from Block Shop Textiles has been hanging in our stairway for over a year. One breezy day it fell. Instead of getting out a step stool to rehang it, I folded it and put it on the bench in the entryway. And then I forgot about it.

Then, when I set about refreshing the house for fall, I saw it and thought, why not use it on the sofa? I’ve been using either black or ivory mud cloths. You can see how I used black in this post, which coincidentally is titled: 5 Easy Ways to Refresh Your Home for Spring.

The Temple Scarf from Block Shop is generous in size and tucks into the corners of the sofa. Would I LOVE a new sofa? Oh yes, I would. But for now, the scarf and a pair of new pillows are doing the job just fine!

On the table

A large vintage farm table has a textured runner down the middle. A black rattan bowl and a vase with plants are also on the table runner.

Fall is the perfect time to add some layers and I like to add a runner to my table. In the summer, I like to keep it simple with maybe a white linen tablecloth but come fall, I love a textured table runner. I got this one last year at Pottery Barn, and it’s still available.

A mix of dishes, glassware, and table linens

I like to mix up dishes, glassware, and table linens. I think the combination of things makes it more interesting than having everything that matches. I used these heavy-checked napkins from Pottery Barn with a mix of everything I have on hand. The small bread and butter plates are from my Shop, and the small knives were a wedding present. Sterling silver, just a little from my set mixed in with everyday Dansk flatware we’ve had for over 35 years.

3. Adding a touch of seasonal decor and fall colors to refresh your home for fall

But no pumpkins, pumpkin decor, or mums! Don’t get me wrong, I love everything pumpkin spice. But August and even the first part of September are just a little too early for that kind of thing. I like to keep it real in early Fall, with real flowers and real fruit. I know there are lots of beautiful faux branches and fruit out there, but for me personally, I prefer the earthy tones of what’s in season in the yard or at the farmer’s market.

What kind of fresh flowers?

Fresh flowers from my yard are going to be what’s in season. Right now, that means limelight hydrangeas that are starting to go from white to green and maybe even a little blush on some petals.

Cosmos are in bloom now through October if we are lucky. I love the pinks, but the white seemed to be what I wanted for my corner banquette today.

What kind of fruit?

I went to the grocery store to look for something fall, and as soon as I saw the pears, I knew they would work. Of course, apples would be perfect too!

4. Add a fall scent to refresh your home

As it gets later into fall, instead of a pumpkin-scented candle, I like to make a stovetop potpourri for seasonal scents. Earthy, a little sweet with a hint of fall is just perfect for the time of year.

What’s in my fall signature scent?

  • Clove
  • Orange
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Vanilla

Room spray

I add the above oils to a small amber spray bottle for a room spray. I add about 20 drops of each (except clove, maybe 5 drops) and then add a splash of witch hazel and top the bottle with water.

Stove Top Potpourri

This is so fun for a weekend with house guests or a special occasion. It’s simple to make, but you need to watch it throughout the day and ensure it’s not running dry of water on the stove. I made these during the holidays as neighbor gifts.

I could use something like that. Is it functional for real food prep? Do you use it a lot. I need to come back to this post. So much to savor.
