A Healthy Date Protein Shake With Chocolate Chips

Healthy date protein shakes are served in two clear glasses and topped with oats and mini chocolate chips.

For Sunday favorites with Cindy and Mary Ann this week, I have tennis in the desert on my mind. We loved going to the Indian Wells Open when we lived in Southern California. Besides watching tennis and enjoying Palm Springs, a date shake at Hadley Fruit Orchard was an absolute must. I can picture the yellow sign. Since we will be watching it on the tennis channel, I decided I needed to make a version of a date shake.

We’ve been making protein smoothies for several years as an easy breakfast, so I figured I could easily transform the original date shake into a healthy, high-protein smoothie. Medjool dates have a natural sweetness, so the shake already feels a little indulgent.

What’s in the original date shake?

The original Hadley’s date shake recipe contains dates, milk, and vanilla ice cream, so it’s no wonder it’s delicious.

Here are the simple ingredients we used to make a healthy date smoothie with protein

  • Frozen bananas
  • Medjool dates
  • Almond butter (creamy)
  • Almond milk
  • Hemp seeds
  • Protein oats
  • Greek yogurt (plain)
  • Vanilla extract
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Ground cardamom

What makes it high in protein?

Bob's Red Mill hemp protein powder and protein oats are key ingredients for a healthy date shake.

I can’t say for sure how many grams of protein are in our date smoothie, but the protein comes from several sources. First, we use Bob’s Red Mill Hemp Protein Powder with 12 grams per serving. It has a very mild taste and can be added to anything, from smoothies to baked goods.

We also added Bob’s Red Mill Protein Oats, which have 10 grams per serving, considerably more than regular oats, and they are gluten free,

We added a dollop of Greek yogurt, which, according to this article in Healthline, has twice the protein as regular yogurt.

Almond butter has about 3.4 grams of protein per tablespoon; peanut butter has slightly more protein.

Add toppings to your smoothie recipe.

I’m always thinking about adding a few toppings to my smoothies. I used mini chocolate chips and a sprinkle of protein oats for this one. Chocolate nibs would be a healthier choice, but we didn’t have those on hand.

More Sunday favorites:

With Love, Meghan

Have you watched any of the Netflix show With Love Meghan, starring Meghan, Duchess of Sussex? What do you think? I love it. She’s warm and elegant, and who wouldn’t want to be her guest?

She’s a natural in front of the camera, obviously as an actor, but I love how in one episode, she shares her ideas on welcoming her guests with bath salts, sweet and salty snacks, a cake made with honey from her bees, and candle making using the bees’ wax. I mean, what’s not love?

Anthopologie Sale

Here are a few favorites that I am loving at Anthroplogie this week. If you use the code ANTHRO20, you will get 20% off, but the sale ends March 10th.

I always find a few fun items to mix in with my basic white dishes at Anthropologie. We use flat bowls for most of our meals. They are the perfect size. The ric rac napkins are fun. I love all the colors, but the warm tomato red with the gold bowls…and how can you resist the juice glasses with mini croissants?

The spreaders come in a set. They would make cute gifts with homemade jam this summer.

The oversize pinstripe suit is super soft and comfortable. I plan to wear dressed up and with sneakers. Plus I can wear the jacket with jeans. The suit is on sale for $244 from $306!

The one item every kitchen needs, according to Ina Garten

I recently saw an article where Ina Garten reccomends that everyone needs an oven thermometer. I don’t know why I have resisted, because I know my oven knobs have a lot of slack. Is it 350º or is it 325º? I finally bought one like this at the grocery store. Do you have one?

Let’s see what fun things Cindy & Mary Ann found this week.

  1. You look amazing in the suit. I liked the Meghan show too but I’m with our friends who lived in England for several years and they automatically don’t like her. Definitely fun if you like California style. I liked the Alice Waters episode.

  2. Love date shakes ( CA girl) and I enjoyed Meghan’s show. I think it is lovely and a relaxing joy to watch. Perhaps taking Harry away, him marrying an American, she is her own woman, not in the “firm”. She is not following the rules. They take their royals seriously!
