How to Decorate a Wine Bottle for a Hostess Gift

| | |

How to decorate a wine bottle for a hostess gift. We are at the beach in France but attended two dinner parties before leaving. I took a few small gifts and wanted to share how I gift-wrapped them. Decorating a wine bottle for a host gift is an easy idea. A pretty ribbon tied to the neck of the bottle or a bottle wrapped in a tea towel or dish towel would work, but using a little paint is much more fun. It makes the perfect hostess gift for your next dinner party invitation.

When I choose a bottle of wine to decorate, I look for bottles with a lot of empty space. Some bottles have a lot of decoration all over them, but that’s not what I want for this project. I look for bottles with only the wine label, and the rest of the bottle is my canvas.

You only need a few supplies and a little imagination. You can paint a design, flowers, a message, or a greeting on a bottle of wine, lemonade, or even olive oil.

The supplies you’ll need:

What to paint on your bottle

This depends on your artistic ability. However, since I am not an artist, I always choose a simple pattern I can easily repeat. I warm up my painting skills on paper first, then move on to the bottle. Painting on glass is easier than on paper. The glass surface is smooth; if you mess up on the glass, you can wash it off and start over.

I usually let something from nature or the garden inspire my design. This time, it was black-eyed Susans and daisies. Both are easy patterns to replicate.

If you want to write a name or message, I suggest using Posca paint pens. They are easy to use for writing and tiny details. What I like about Posca paint pens is that they are much easier to use than Sharpie paint pens. Once you’ve activated a new Posca paint pen, it works again the next time you want to use it without trying to get the paint to the tip again. It’s ready to paint when you are.

You could use Posca paint pens to make a gift tag to tie on the top of the bottle or to add to a gift. I used the kraft paper that I painted daisies on as a warmup for matching gift wrap. I wrapped up a pair of Niwaki floral scissors, which make lovely gifts.

Make it into a holiday party with some friends.

Invite a few friends for a craft night during the holiday season. Everyone brings a couple of bottles of wine they want to decorate to give at holiday parties. Serve some fun snacks and maybe a glass of wine, and have everyone paint their bottles. It’s a great way to get a few friends together and have a fun activity while catching up.

As the host, you must have enough paintbrushes, paints, and pens for everyone to use. You can set up individual workstations with a piece of Kraft paper, a small paint tray, and at least two paintbrushes. Have small cups of water and paper towels to use. Everyone can share the paint and pens. You only use a small amount of paint for each bottle.

You could have decorative ribbon or twine available. I love this twine crate in different colors from Terrain. The twine crate would make a great hostess gift, too! I use mine all year long! It’s a go-to gift for anyone who loves to wrap gifts simply!

Hand-painted candles

While painting a bottle, why not add a pair of hand-painted tapers? Painting with Posca paint pens is so easy. You can read more about painting candles in this post.

Other favorite finds of the week:

Mob House Hotel

We will end our France trip in Paris at our favorite hotel, where I’ll meet Mary Ann for a few days to talk “shop.” You can read more about it in this post.

The Paris Flea Market: les Puces de Pari, Saint-Ouen

This book was just released. It’s about the largest flea market in Paris, just steps from the Mob House Hotel, which Philippe Starck designed. The book includes a photo of him at the hotel.

This book is for anyone who loves the treasure hunt, from weekend bargain hunters to professional designers from all over the world.

Quince Luggage and Compression Packing Cubes

We love the brand Quince for cashmere crewnecks to denim and corduroy to luggage. Before this trip we added two new 27″ Check-in Hard Shell Suitcases. They are lightweight, but durable, making them ideal for packing up our treasures for SHOP Most Lovely Things! And for storage, the carry-on bag nests inside perfectly.

The 27″ Check-in Hard Shell suitcase from Quince comes with a laundry bag. The price is $199 compared to the Away bag, which is over $400 for a comparable size suitcase.

The Compression Packing Cubes come in a set, giving new meaning to organized packing! A set of six costs $49.
