A Visit to the John Derian Company in NYC: A Holiday Must-See

There’s something fun about discovering a shop that feels like much more than just a retail space, and that’s exactly how I feel every time I step inside one of the three shops at the John Derian Company in New York’s East Village. Nestled in three adjacent storefronts (6, 8, and 10 East 2nd Street). Each store offers its own distinct atmosphere. If you’re visiting NYC, especially around the holidays (meaning October through December), it’s definitely worth carving out some time to stop in and take a look.

A brief look at the story behind John Derian
John Derian is a New York–based artist and designer best known for his beautifully handcrafted decoupage pieces — trays, plates, paperweights, and coasters made from 18th- and 19th-century illustrations. What began in 1989 as a small studio making one-of-a-kind home accessories has since grown into a brand that’s loved by interior designers, collectors, and anyone with an appreciation for design and craftsmanship. His work captures a sense of nostalgia, blending nature, history, and art in a way that feels both classic and fresh.
His East Village shops are a reflection of that spirit. In every square foot of the store, you’ll find color, texture, and maybe even a story. The first location opened in 1995, and over time, the neighboring spaces joined to form a trio that together showcases everything from his iconic decoupage to curated home goods, furniture, textiles, and seasonal décor. There are the worn wooden floors, the lighting and mood, the art and design, not to mention the display of Christmas ornaments. It literally feels like you’re stepping inside the studio of John Derian.
The three John Derian shops
Each of the three adjoining spaces offers its own kind of charm, and together they create an experience that’s inspiring. Whether you’re browsing his signature decoupage pieces, admiring vintage treasures, or stepping into the holiday shop filled with hand-blown ornaments, it’s impossible not to feel inspired and a little bit awe-struck. Here’s a look inside all three and why you’ll want to visit each one.
1. The Original John Derian Dry Goods Store

The first of the three shops is what started it all, John Derian’s original dry goods store. This is where you’ll find his signature decoupage pieces: glass trays, plates, and paperweights made with antique imagery that feel as timeless as they are beautiful. Every shelf and table — vintage linens, handmade ceramics, quirky candles shaped like cakes, and many other unique objects. It’s the kind of place where you can lose track of time, discovering new treasures in every corner.
2. The Furniture and Home Store

The home shop feels like stepping into the pages of a design book. It’s filled with cozy furniture, plush textiles, and one-of-a-kind pieces that make you want to add a few to your home. Here, you’ll find collaborations with some of John’s favorite makers — from Astier de Villatte ceramics to handwoven rugs and vintage lighting. Every item has that unmistakable Derian charm: thoughtful, soulful, and quietly luxurious.
3. The Holiday and Ornament Shop

And then there’s the most magical of them all — the holiday shop. Come Christmastime, it’s transformed into what can only be described as the most Christmassy store in all of New York. Every inch glows with festive warmth — from garlands draped across antique cabinets to tables covered in hand-blown glass ornaments. Each decoration feels like a keepsake, something you’ll cherish for years to come. Whether you collect ornaments or just love the spirit of the season, it doesn’t get any better than this shop.

When you step back outside onto the East Village street, you can’t help but walk away inspired. The John Derian shops are a reminder to me of how much I enjoy beauty in everyday things. Whether it’s a hand-blown ornament, a perfectly imperfect vintage piece, or simply the enjoyment of wandering through spaces filled with creativity, there’s a little something here for everyone to enjoy. John Derian is the kind of place that captures the magic of New York in the best possible way, especially during the holidays, when the windows are glowing and the air feels festive.

The John Derian stores are my most favorite stores ever! They are a feast for the eyes.
Agreed! A total feast for the eyes!
