A Visit to Kabinett & Kammer in Franklin, NY

It’s Sunday favorites with Mary Ann and Cindy. This week, I am sharing my visit to this beautiful shop and introducing you to The Table Less Traveled and a new favorite dress.

A few weeks ago, we took a three-hour drive to the tiny town of Franklin, New York, to visit the shop of Sean Scherer, Kabinett & Kammer. Sean is the author of two gorgeous books, so I needed to visit his shop! He’s only open on the weekends, so I made sure he would be open. And on a sunny Saturday in July, we drove through the winding roads, green pastures dotted with barns and churches, picturesque vistas to finally find our way to Franklin, NY. A town of about 300 people.

We asked Sean how he landed in Franklin. He said he knew the area and found the building. It is a spectacular space with a lot of natural light. A couple of large rooms and a smaller, almost cave-like space are in the back of the shop.

There is so much to take in that I kept going back and forth to different vignettes. Each One had so many interesting objects, but of course, Sean’s magic in the way he arranges these objects makes it so artistic and interesting. Color, style, shape, and age of objects…all come into play.

His first book, Kabinett & Kammer: Creating Authentic Interiors, came out in 2020, with a forward written by Anderson Cooper. It’s a guide to collecting and displaying these objects.

Sean taught art history and design for 15 years at the State University of New York at Oneonta. He now teaches an online course called Domestika. You can find out more here.

Sean Scherer’s Vignettes came out in April of this year. In this book, Sean photographed himself and showed readers how to display some of their favorite things on any surface—a tabletop, a wall, a bookshelf.

The Table Less Traveled

About a year ago, I learned of The Table Less Traveled when I became acquainted with its founder, Annie Sim. The Table Less Traveled started when Annie bought an around-the-world round-trip ticket and traveled for seven months in search of something new. During her travels, she stayed in people’s homes and ate dinner with families, turning her curiosity into relationships with the people and communities of the places she traveled.

When she returned to the United States, people always asked her for advice on how to find this kind of experience in their travels. So, in 2015, Annie started The Table Less Traveled to bring a different kind of experience to travel. And nine years later, she has a team! Meet her team here!

If you are thinking about taking a trip where you immerse yourself in a culture and enjoy more meaningful travel experiences, I would encourage you to consider The Table Less Traveled.

Outfit of the Week from Quince

This midi dress from Quince easily transitions from summer to fall, and there is so much to love about it! It’s made of the same cotton poplin as the shirt I wear constantly, as mentioned in this post. It has the perfect sleeve length and pockets for $69.90! Oh, and it comes in four colors!

I’m also wearing Luna Polarized Sunglasses from Quince, a vintage Coach bag similar to this one from Madewell, and all leather back Birkenstocks.

Kim of Northern California Style + Trinidad, California

Have you been to Trinidad, California? Kim wrote an excellent post on where to stay, what to see, and where to eat in this little seaside town in Northern California. It looks so charming! You can read her full post here.

Let’s see what Mary Ann and Cindy found this week!

  1. Dear Annie,

Your day trips are so inspirational. Franklin reminds me of the many villages I toured with visiting family and friends while my husband slaved away as an hospital intern in upstate NY. These outings honed my love of antique and vintage finds for creating vignettes.

Any flea markets in France you can recommend? We leave for three weeks on September 14th in celebration of our 60th wedding anniversary.

    Best to you,
    Diney on Mercer Island

    1. Hi Diney! Yes, where are you going in France? We always go to the flea market in Lyon. If you are near Beaune on Saturday, they have a flea market that’s supposed to be great. Then of course I have my favroites in Paris. Lwet me know where you will be in France, and I’ll let you know if I have been to any in those areas! Happy 60th anniversary!

  2. Oh boy do those tours sound like fun!! I loved Kim’s post on Trinidad and you look adorable in that Quince dress.

  3. What a fun post. I love your travel ideas and recommendations…hence Howard and I are going back to Beaune for the cooking class!
You look so cute in that dress! And comfortable.

  4. Annie, Thank you so much for sharing my post on Trinidad. I hope you get back here sometime to visit. It’s really special, not unlike Franklin I would guess. That is on my list now. I would love to see the cute town and that a inspiring store!
It is inspiring how he displays really unique things.
I adore this dress on you! What a pretty basic that is something you can use for so many seasons too.
Hope you have a great week Annie!
