As former Californians we are constantly trying to recreate summer weekends that often consisted of nothing but a beach day that ended with fish tacos. We finally found just that at Rockaway Beach. The first weekend we went the forecast was calling for showers and it was cloudy the entire day. Perfect. It was at low tide, small, but perfect little waves and no crowds. The next weekend was a hot sunny August day so there were tons of people and the waves weren’t quite as gentle. But that’s what’s so great about the beach, everyday is different. You’re at the water, the smell of the ocean is familiar and you found parking right across from the beach. What more could you ask for? Fish Tacos? Yes, there’s that too.
If you go, make sure you plan a stop at Tacoway Beach for lunch or dinner.
The vibe is hip and young. The tables are shared and you just grab a seat. The people next to us had drinks, but had yet to stand in line for tacos. We assured them the line moved quickly and they were worth the wait. Our seat mates finally said, “So you are all a family, right?” His friend said, “And you’re from the city?” I guess we didn’t look quite hip enough for this crowd. I replied, “Worse, were from Connecticut.”
So if you’re looking for waves, a great beach and a boardwalk…look no further than the Rockaways. From the city it’s one hour on the ferry and about 1 1/2 hours on the A Train. It’s about the same by car for us from Connecticut and honestly, it’s worth it! Chime in if you have any other places we need to try this fall while we still have beach weather in New York. One more thing— I checked several websites and I am still confused on just what to call it–The Rockaways, Rockaways or Rockaway Beach?
I also wrote about Queens in this post.

It was such a beautiful day! But would not have mattered….I was with my family before Patrick left for school. I’m officially an empty nester.

That city holds a wealth of wonder.
(Blogging and meeting new friends like you helped me through my empty nest years. )
I am now on the threshold of retirement. I hope to bring Mr to NYC one day. I have not been for 30 years. I traveled there 4 to 5 times a year for business.
Keep sharing!
I’ll be here.

Lynne,
I am so happy for this blog and friends that I’ve met like you now more than ever. This empty nest thing is overrated! But it looks like your summer was full of happy times with your son’s wedding. I hope you do visit NYC soon. If you do, I would love to meet you for coffee at Buvette!
