How to Make Beautiful Flowers Using Coffee Filters

|

How to make beautiful paper flowers using coffee filters and food coloring. You probably have everything you need to make them right at home to make this flower craft.

I’m joining a few friends to share flower crafts, and I must admit, I wasn’t sure I was going to find something I loved, but turns out these coffee filter flowers are fun to make, and so beautiful. You can expect to see them again in the future!

The simple supplies you will need to make these DIY coffee filter flowers

  • Coffee filters in any size
  • Food coloring or watercolor paint
  • Scissors
  • Small jars or cups
  • A small glass
  • Paper towels
  • Baking sheets
  • Glue stick
  • Eye dropper
  • Floral tape (fabric)

Step-by-step detailed instructions to make easy coffee filter flowers

  1. Take 7 or 8 coffee filters the same size and fold each in half, then fold in half again, and one more time. Cut a rounded or scalloped edge at the widest part. A scalloped edge will create a more delicate petal. Repeat with all 7 or 8 coffee filters.
  2. Mix up a few colors that you want to use. Experiment a little by mixing drops of food coloring in small jars of water until you like the color(s).
  3. Then, dip each folded coffee filter into the small jar until it has thoroughly soaked up enough to cover the entire coffee filter from tip to edge.
  4. Place each on several layers of paper towels.
  5. Unfold each coffee filter at least halfway. Coffee filters are pretty durable, so don’t worry too much about tearing the paper.
  6. Place them on a baking sheet in a single layer.
  7. Allow to air dry (if you have the patience for that sort of thing) or put into a 200º oven for 3-5 minutes.
  8. Remove the baking sheets and unfold the halves.
  9. Take your glass and place one coffee filter inside, folding it over and adding a little glue to the rim. Continue working around the glass with all seven or eight coffee filters. Adding a little glue from a glue stick each time you’ve added a coffee filter (or additional petal).
  10. Turn the glass upside down, remove it, and carefully pull apart the center of the filters to the desired effect. You’ll see how the flower petals look like blooming flowers!

How to use your coffee filter paper flowers

Paper flowers can be used as gift toppers, as part of a tablescape for a bridal shower, Mother’s Day, spring brunch, Easter, or any gathering. You could even use shades of red and pink for Poinsettias at Christmas. It’s hard to believe these three-dimensional flowers are made with coffee filters.

If you want to skip the food coloring to make colored coffee filters, use them as-is and make all-white roses or flowers. All white would look beautiful on kraft paper gift wrap.

Try using different colors to achieve the desired color. To test colors, use an eye dropper to drop the food coloring onto a few layers of coffee filters. Coffee filters are inexpensive, and you’ll probably have more than you need with just one package. I bought two packages in two different sizes.

Is making coffee filter flowers a good project for kids?

Yes, kids can make these from a relatively young age with some help. Cutting or trimming the folded-over coffee filters is much more doable than making paper bag snowflakes. A glue stick is all you need for the coffee filters; no hot glue is required for this project.

Kids could use washable markers if they didn’t want the mess of food coloring (it does stain your fingertips).

If making these with kids, they may want to use a green pipe cleaner for the stem. You can also make leaves using the coffee filters cut into leaf shapes to accompany your gorgeous coffee filter flowers!

    1. Diney! how did I not think of these flowers for May Day! I loved the whole May Day celebration as a child. The making the baskets, the rigng and run…the whole thing! It’s so sad how the tradition seems to have gotten lost over the years!
