How to Make a Shamrock Moss Terrarium in a Glass Jar

How to make a shamrock moss terrarium in a glass jar for simple, fresh decor around St. Patrick’s Day or as a centerpiece for entertaining in March.
I’m joining a few friends for a spring decor DIY and thought my super simple shamrock terrariums were perfect to share. I love something fresh this time of year that lasts a little longer than cut flowers. You’ll find links below to more posts on spring decor.
The supplies you will need to make a jar terrarium

You only need a few supplies to make these simple terrariums.
- I used two sizes of Anchor Hocking Jars. You could also use a low cylinder vase.
- Shamrock or clover plants like those from Trader Joe’s.
- Moss
- Gravel or small stones
- Spray bottle to water the plants to keep them fresh
- Copper wire
- Tapers
Where to find your supplies
I try to use jars that I have on hand. I use these from my 24-square-foot pantry, coffee bar, and sometimes for fresh flowers like hydrangeas. These jars are available at Walmart for a very reasonable price. The dollar store or craft store is also a good source for glass jars and vases that would work for terrariums.
Pea gravel can also be found at craft stores or pet supply stores. Shamrock plants are available at the grocery store or Trader Joe’s.
There are many types of moss. For this project, I prefer to use sheet moss, but use what you have or can find. Even cushion moss, which can be found at the base of trees in wooded areas, looks beautiful. It’s one of my favorite species of moss. The bright green color looks gorgeous with shamrock plants.
How to assemble the shamrock terrariums

- Add a layer of pea gravel or small stones to the bottom of a jar or vase. I found my white stones in the pet supply section at Walmart.
- Wrap your nursery potted shamrock plant in a preserved moss sheet and place it inside the jar.
- Mist with water
- Wrap heavy gauge copper or brass wire around a taper, leaving enough on both sides to use as a stake to insert into the potted plant. You can purchase copper wire at Home Depot by the foot. It’s about $0.45 per foot.

How to display and use the shamrock terrariums

These shamrock terrariums in glass jars look beautiful as centerpieces in natural light. Add some tapers to make them centerpieces for a dinner party. Try to keep away from direct sunlight. The terrariums should last several weeks. You can see how we used them on a tablescape in this post.
