Four easy ways to spruce up grocery store spring plants

Four easy ways to spruce up grocery store spring plants with just a few things you might have on hand or could pick up on a walk!

I welcome a little color in my mostly neutral house in the winter and after the holidays! Spring plants are an instant pick-me-up! I do a few things when I bring home plants from the grocery store.

First, buy all one color and re-pot

I like to buy all one color so I can re-pot them in groups and then in small pots. I think choosing one color, even if they are not all the same kind of plant, can be really nice. Sometimes I choose all-white flowering plants, but yesterday orange popped out at me while shopping.

Sometimes you have to go with what’s available. I buy at the grocery store or Trader Joe’s. When Madeline and I went to Copenhagen in the early spring a few years ago, we could not believe how many shops and outdoor markets were bursting with flowering spring plants and huge bundles of tulips.

Find interesting containers to repot the plants.

In addition to beautiful pots that I always use, I like to use things like tureens and the right bowl or a wooden crate. Last year I was all about planting spring flowers in wood crates. You can read that post here.

Spruce up your grocery store plants with some foraged twigs.

When I go for a walk, I rarely come home without something I have foraged. I pick up small twigs to add to fresh flowers and planters this time of year.

And don’t forget the moss.

Adding a little moss to the top of plants is a game changer. One bag of moss can be used over and over. Don’t toss it once your plant is done; save it and use it again. Spritz it a little with water, and it greens up again. There are several kinds of moss to choose from, so pick your favorite and keep it on hand for use at home or when giving a plant as a gift.

What can I use instead of moss?

I like using small stones, rocks, dried hydrangeas, or cut-up twigs. You can use many things, some you may have without buying a thing!

Adding a little moss to a potted plant instantly looks like it came from a nice florist. So even if you are taking the plant out of the plastic wrap and putting it into another pot, add some moss…and maybe a few twigs. Those are my four easy ways to spruce up grocery store spring plants. Dope Ropes

I’ve been following Gail McNeill (@fiftysister) for a while now. She’s super inspiring, and one of the things she did to get in great shape is jump roping. She uses jump ropes from Dope Ropes, so I ordered a couple. I’m incorporating jump roping into my fitness, and so far, I love it!

Even when I can’t get to the gym, I can jump rope. I’m starting slowly. Very slowly. I started with just 100 jumps for the first two weeks. I’m up to 120 every day. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but it’s actually harder than you think if it has been a while.

I suggest starting with the beaded jump rope if you are a beginner. It’s exactly what I wanted, reminding me of the gym class jump ropes. They have great information on getting started right here. Save 10% on your purchase with code: ANNIEDIAMOND
