Why a Trench Coat is the Perfect Spring Accessory

Today, I am joining a few friends to share our favorite spring coats and jackets. (You will find links at the bottom). A classic trench coat is the perfect accessory for the spring season. It’s a timeless wardrobe staple. It can be worn with anything and is a good weight for cool spring weather. However, it’s perfect in the fall, too. Last September, I saw women wearing trench coats all over Paris when it was unseasonably cold. I used to think of it more as a spring coat, but it’s great in any season when you need a light jacket.
There are many new and vintage options for this classic wardrobe staple. You no longer need to invest $3,000 for a Burberry trench. While some may choose to invest in a Burberry, other options that are just as lovely are available. In the last few years, the Clyde Trench from Sézane has become the “it” trench for women. The Clyde Trench is around $350 or a little less for the cropped version, or the Carter, which is a short trench coat but not as cropped as the Bobby. You’ll see everyone wearing it with the cuffs rolled up to expose the signature checked lining.

There are so many different ways to wear this piece of outerwear. A thin Uniqlo compact PUFFTECH vest or jacket is the perfect layering piece on cold days. Another reason I like the traditional trench coat from Sézane is because it is a bit oversized in the shoulders and arms, allowing for layering without looking too oversized.
Find the right trench, and you will have it forever.
A good trench coat is something you will have for a long time. Sézane has several color options in their longer-length coats. Mine is the lightest, called ecru, and it was probably not the best choice. It shows everything. The camel, light olive green, dark green, choco, black, or even beige would have been a better choice. All of the color options are versatile; some are just more practical. It’s a matter of personal style.

Ordering the correct size from Sézane
Sézane has only a few stores, and even though we have one in New York, I often order online or shop at the stores in Paris. Sézane suggests ordering one size down if you are between sizes. I followed this advice, and both are the perfect fit. They offer free shipping and free returns, but so far, I’ve been lucky to choose the right size based on recommendations on the website.
A free tote bag with every order at Sézane
Another lovely thing about Sézane is that you get a free tote bag with every purchase.. This time, it’s a checked bag, in collaboration with Printempts. The tote design changes, but each is like a memento.
The Mac Trench from Everlane

Another stylish trench coat that is between a short and long trench coat is the Mac Coat. It is probably the easiest length to wear with anything. It’s only partially lined but can be washed in the machine and hung dry with minimal steaming to make it look new. It’s under $200 and available in four neutral colors. The color I’m wearing is no longer available, but any color is more versatile than mine.

The fact that I can wash it makes this classic coat a favorite in my closet and one of the best trench coats for the money, in my opinion. Everlane always runs true to size, from my experience.

The Right Trench Coat is like a little black dress.
Finding the right trench coat is more than finding a light jacket for your wardrobe. It’s like having a little black dress with a timeless design. You’ll wear it again and again. This spring style essential has the power to take a nothing outfit and make it an outfit. I can be home working wearing a sweatshirt, striped tee, jeans, loafers, or ballet flats. Add a classic trench and a cute tote; it’s an outfit suitable for running errands or a lunch date.

Buying a Vintage Trench
In Paris, I often see vintage Burberry trench coats for both men and women at the flea markets. I can only imagine they would be even more available in the UK.
Another excellent spring coat is the Will Jacket from Sézane.

Sézane has several versions of this jacket. It is a fantastic jacket for those in-between spring days. You can layer under it or, for warmer days, just a T-shirt. Because of its slightly oversized boxy fit, it’s outwear. The Will jacket includes denim, cotton twill, wool, and suede. It is a versatile piece to have in your wardrobe to wear with anything. I love the big pockets to hold my phone while strolling flea markets in Paris or riding my bike in the city.
The Will jacket is like a barn jacket or a chore coat but a little longer, making it the perfect classic staple for any time of year. It is similar in weight to a denim jacket.

If I could only have two spring jackets or coats, a trench coat and a Will jacket would be an easy choice! Both are versatile and will never go out of style!

“The Right Trench Coat is like a little black dress”…love this. I have been wanting a Clyde jacket ever since I first saw you in it.
Or the cropped? Either would be perfect!
I love how you have the Carter with the skirt! It’s so chic-looking, Annie! I also have the Clyde in Ecru, and it’s definitely not the best choice in color because of the reasons you listed. Haha.
