Have you heard of the paint trend color drenching?

Have you heard of the paint trend color drenching? Typically, a color-drenched room uses darker shades of two colors, and the results are pretty dramatic. I’ve been thinking about it for our main floor home office. It’s a great way to add a little drama to small spaces.

This past week, we traveled to Litchfield, Connecticut, to stay at The Abner Hotel. It opened in September, and its color-drenched rooms had a dramatic effect. A single color can be dramatic on its own (like the guest rooms with a deep, sunny golden color), but two from the same color palette make it even more amazing! The Parlor Room was the perfect place for this monochromatic look at The Abner. Two shades of the same color…is that called double drenching? I think I love it! More on our stay at The Abner next week.

The Parlor is a small room just as you step off the elevator before entering the larger restaurant. The dark paint colors and overall design, with the leather bench along one wall facing the fireplace, made it cozy. The stained wood window frames gave the whole room a cohesive look. The room gets a lot of light filtering through the sheer cafe-style curtains. At different times of the day, the darker colors changed but remained gorgeous, from sunshine to candlelight.
Color drenching makes a bold statement, especially when using vibrant colors, but it makes the feel of a cozy room. Would you consider doing this in a room or smaller space? It’s just paint, so a pretty cost effective way to update smaller spaces. Read more here from Farrow & Ball brand ambassador Patrick O’Donnell on Remodelista.
More Sunday Favorites with Cindy & Mary Ann
Since we are less than two weeks from Valentine’s Day, I thought it would be fun to share some ideas for a few mostly inexpensive but thoughtful and fun gifts.
Codenames Game
Patrick’s girlfriend gave us Codenames for Christmas, and we played it last weekend. Have you heard of it? It’s such a fun game. I know it will become a family tradition to play it when we are all together. The box is pretty small, so we can even travel with it! Let me know if you’ve played it!
Recycled Glass Hearts
We decorated our front door with foraged bare branches and dried hydrangeas at the base of the planter. Then, we added these recycled glass hearts tied with natural jute twine. I also repurposed a grapevine wreath with a burnished heart medallion hung using ripped canvas ribbon. You can see it here on my Instagram here.

Hi Annie
I like the idea of color drenching and have been reading a lot about it lately as well. I have no idea where it would work in my home but it is a fun trend. Lot’s of fun valentine goodies to tempt us all today!!
I love the idea of color drenching!!!! I just love color & the thought of having color all over your room is very exciting to me! I would love to do this in a room & paint the floors in our kitchen!! Probably won’t get the courage to do either one, but a girl can dream!!
Ordered the cookies from William Sonoma, looked fun, delicious, and easy! Win! Win!
Hi Nancy!
I’ve had painted floors before…in the kitchen, and oh my…what a struggle to keep them clean. I love the idea and the look when I see them on Pinterest, but not very practical.
Those cookies look amazing….slice-and-bake, so fun to have on hand. I had a friend that used to come visit me and make vanilla chocolate pinwheels and leave them in my freezer so I always had homemade cookies. So whenever I see them I think of my dear friend Lorna!

A couple of Years ago I drenched my small powder room with a dark rusty orange color. No natural light but a large mirror gives as much light as needed. I’m still happy with the result so I say go for it!
Thank you for the game recommendation and the Valentine gift ideas.
oooh, I’ll bet a dark rusty orange colort is so pretty. A mirror and a flickering candle…that’s all you need!
The artistic side of me loves the idea of color drenching, but I will leave it to the places like hotels and restaurants. They have people who will come in and make changes when the trend outlives itself. I would be tasked with several coats of paint on a ceiling to cover the darker color, and scraping and prepping woodwork, doors, trim, and moldings to prep for a new color. Yes, it is just paint, but it is also trending now and you ladies always advise us regarding fashion to “stick to the classics, avoid the trends”.
I agree Pat, as tempted as I am, I am a bit nervous. I don’t think I could paint the window frames. I’ve lived in too many old house where they had been painted so many times, hardly any of them opened without struggle. Our house now is over 100 years old, but has new wondwos and what a joy it is to open them all up in the spring, and fall! So we will stick to the classics!
I love color drenched rooms! We have had at least one in our house for about 15 years. At our last house it was the master bedroom drenched in Indigo Batik. Then when we moved we loved the color so much we color drenched the living room in the same color, it’s cozy and one of our favorite rooms.
I have not hear of this game. I am going to have to get one, our family loves to play games.
Love all of the Valentine’s Day finds!
Have a great week Annie.
