I love the idea of an eat-in-kitchen for a ton of reasons– some of those reasons are probably cliche, but it is true, the kitchen is the heart of the home, so why not have a table? It’s where we cook, do homework, eat, talk, and just hang out. When my kids were young I used to joke that we could live in a very small house because all we really needed was a kitchen and a place to sleep. If I were in the kitchen, that’s where my kids wanted to be. I loved it and that’s why it makes so much sense to have the traditional eat-in-kitchen. Even now, when I’m preparing dinner and my college-age son comes in, he immediately finds a spot in the corner of the built-in bench and tells me about his day. If we didn’t have a comfortable spot to sit in the kitchen, I would miss out! And let me tell you…the days go fast from when they go away to college, graduate and move out.
I think Brooke’s kitchen is the perfect example of an eat-in-kitchen. She had a built-in bench made (with storage) and used these cushions to make it extra comfortable. Her family of five eats, entertains, reads Scriptures, play games, and work on homework and projects at this table. Brooke makes the most of every inch of her home, but no space is more meaningful than her eat-in-kitchen.
With a round
Round tables work well in a lot of eat-in kitchens that are short on space. We have a Saarinen round pedestal table and have had it in several kitchens over the years. I would have to say making a built-in-bench when we moved into this house has made it my favorite space. Only recently did we add cushions and that too has made a big difference on comfort.
Most nights it’s just the three of us while Patrick is home for the Summer, so we’ve been eating in the kitchen. I love these placemats by Chilewich. Rather than choosing black or gray like I typically would, I chose the color Terra. The color and the name blend beautifully with the painting in the kitchen by Lizzy Love. Chilewich has a store in the city that I’ve visited many times. You’ve probably seen their beautiful home products at places like Crate and Barrel and Design Within Reach. They are designed and made in New York and will last for many years. I love knowing that the products I’m buying will stand the test of time.
An eat-in-kitchen is a simple idea that has been replaced in many homes by the open concept house. I will always love having a table in our kitchen where we can set the table for casual meals for breakfast, lunch or dinner! Do you have an eat-in-kitchen?
