Add hooks, a mirror, a bench, and a simple DIY Shelf for an entryway in a small house
Our house is like many small homes of its age. We think it may have been originally considered a foursquare home, but at some point, the home was renovated and made a more open concept. In a small house, I can see why they opened up the living room to include the foyer, but it does present a few challenges.
We added simple black hooks, a mirror, and a bench to help define the area as the entryway and a place to drop your keys, hang up your coat or put-on, and take off your shoes.
When you enter our home from the porch you are basically in the living room. To the right of the door is about 4′ of space. We decided to designate this space as our entryway both for aesthetic and practical reasons. We hung a mirror and made a very simple shelf.
The Shore Bench and Lanai Mirror from Serena & Lily
We had the Shore bench from Serena & Lily and just added the cushion. I was tempted to get the white linen because we are heading into summer, but ended up going with the velvet cushion in fog gray. It makes it look and feel so much more luxurious.

Instructions how to make a shelf step-by-step
For the shelf, we used a 24″ round tabletop and a solid-wood bracket from Home Depot. We trimmed it to the depth that felt right…which is 6.75″ depth in the middle. We also trimmed the front of the bracket about 1″ so that it sits 1″ inch from the edge of the shelf. The total price was $16 and now we have the perfect little shelf!
